This thread is intended to be used as a master thread for reference for all the weekly sales reports from Home Media Magazine, Nielsen Videoscan, The-Numbers or any other sources of weekly sales information.
Note that The-Numbers, Nielsen Videoscan first alert as reported by Home Media Magazine and The Hollywood Reporter, Rentrak and many other sources use a Monday-Sunday reporting week while the weekly revenue and unit sales figures published by Home Media Magazine (HMM) each week is offset a day with a Sunday-Saturday reporting week. With new releases coming usually on Tuesday and major releases sometimes on Friday that results in a slight reporting period offset where major releases get one less day of sales (Sunday) in the HMM revenue and unit sales data for the entire format sales figures each week for Blu-ray and DVD and some of the impact of the hot new releases is spread into the next HMM reporting week.
Also note that Home Media Magazine and The-Numbers weekly sales data are also estimates and have inherent reporting errors and assumptions. Even when they may differ in magnitude in the estimates or may be biased in their methodology, especially on a weekly or short term basis their general trends over the time are more consistent and more accurate. The-Numbers in particular is designed to be more accurate in the cumulative long term numbers and may have initial weekly sales estimates that may have issues. But The-Numbers data is the only routine weekly unit and revenues estimate available that is openly available and is free from Non-Disclosure requirements from data aggregators.
Also keep in mind that Walmart sales data is not currently available to Nielsen Videoscan and is not a part of their reporting and must be estimated by The-Numbers and other data sources. Walmart sales estimates are generally easier to do for unit sales than revenues generated and estimates for high volume titles have more error in the estimates from The-Numbers and HMM..
Hope this data helps to put things into perspective.
Please do not place any comments in this thread but try and place them into the weekly discussion thread also in this forum

Thanks
Kosty
NOTE: July 4, 2012

Plenty of New-Year Savings
4 Jan, 2012
By: John Latchem
e2badebd_Money0.jpeg

The arrival of the new year means retailers are clearing out their shelves with bargains on DVDs and Blu-rays, and some good news for those looking to shed the holiday pounds.
Target offered a selection of fitness DVDs at $9 each, while Best Buy had fitness DVDs at $7.99 each.
Best Buy offered a one-day sale on New Year’s Day, with Blu-ray combo packs of Transformers: Dark of the Moon and X-Men: First Class at $9.99 each, and Smallville: The Complete Series at $189.99.
Fans of “Justified” could get a free T-shirt with the show’s logo at Best Buy with the purchase of the season two DVD ($19.99) or Blu-ray ($24.99), and a $10 savings when both seasons of the show are purchased together.
Target’s big sale focused on a $15 price point for TV DVD sets or a selection of recent Blu-ray releases Marley & Me: The Puppy Years expanded beyond a Walmart exclusive, with Best Buy offering the direct-to-video spinoff at $4.99 for the DVD and $7.99 for the Blu-ray, while Target had the DVD at $9.

‘Contagion’ Infects Sales Charts; ‘Hangover’ Rises to Top Rentals

11 Jan, 2012
By: Thomas K. Arnold

Contagion
Warner Home Video snagged the top four spots on the national home video sales charts for the week ended Jan. 8, with the newly released Contagion debuting at No. 1 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart.
Three previous releases followed: The Hangover Part II at No. 2, Dolphin Tale at No. 3 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 at No. 4.
The prior week’s top seller, 20th Century Fox’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, slipped back to No. 5 its fourth week, selling about 31% as many copies as Contagion.
Contagion also topped Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart for the week, followed at No. 2 by Hangover and No. 3 by Harry Potter. Rise of the Planets of the Apes, the top-selling Blu-ray disc of the previous week, slipped to No. 6.
Contagion generated 40% of its first-week unit sales from Blu-ray Disc. On Home Media Magazine’s video rental chart for the week, Hangover moved up to No. 1 now that its holdback from rental outlets such as Netflix and Redbox has ended. Universal Studios’ Cowboys & Aliens, also now available at those two rental channels, shot up to No. 2 from No. 56, while 20th Century Fox’s Mr. Popper’s Penguins, also off its holdback, soared to No. 3 from No. 63.
Sony Pictures’ Columbiana, the previous week’s top rental, slipped to No. 4.
Another Sony release, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, was the week’s highest-charting new release, debuting on the rental chart at No. 6.

Blu-ray Sales: Overall Sales are in Remission
The Blu-ray sales chart was both busy and slow this week. On the one hand, there were five new releases that charted this week, including three in the top ten.
On the other hand, only one of those new releases, Contagion, did any significant business. It was able to sell 274,000 units while generating $4.93 million in revenue, giving it an opening week Blu-ray share of 40%. That's a very good share for a drama, but its overall home market run is disappointing.
The Hangover II rose to second place with 158,000 units / $2.28 million for the week. After more than a month of release, the film has sold 1.76 million units and earned $29.40 million in revenue.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 remained in third place with 91,000 units / $1.46 million for the week, while it now has sold 4.81 million units and generating $100.78 million after two months of release.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon rose into fourth place, as if to emphasize how weak the new releases were. It added 82,000 units / $1.82 million to its totals, which now sit at just under 3.00 million units / $64.21 million. Cowboys and Aliens was right behind with 82,000 units / $1.78 million for the week and 1.14 million units / $25.12 million after a month.
The next best of the new releases was Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, which placed seventh with 55,000 units / $1.09 million and an opening week Blu-ray share of 32%. That's a little low for a horror film, but acceptable.
Justified: Season Two debuted in ninth place with 52,000 units / $1.43 million. Normally, TV on DVD releases do quite poorly on high definition, but this release managed an opening week Blu-ray share of 28%, which is much better than the average TV on DVD release manages.
Further down the list we find Shark Night in 19th place with 34,000 units / $720,000. Its opening week Blu-ray share was just 30%, which was disappointing. Then again, it has been disappointing every step of its journey.
I Don't Know How She Does It was the final new release, which only managed 23rd place with 12,000 units / $257,000. Its opening week Blu-ray share was a miniscule 14%, which is bad, even given the genre and target audience.
The overall Blu-ray market was again terrible compared to last week falling 41% in terms of units and 40% in terms of dollars. Worse still, it was down from the same week last year, by significant margins of 7% and 18% respectively.

DVD sales hung on better compared to last week, but fell faster compared to last year.
This overall Blu-ray share slipped this week to 34% in terms of units and 38% in terms of dollars, but so far this has proven to be a bad time of year for high definition. The releases that come out tend to be secondary releases, as opposed to visually impressive blockbusters.
Next week, prominent Blu-ray releases include Moneyball, Boardwalk Empire and really that's it. Neither of these releases are what you would call prime releases for high definition, so odds are it will be another slow week.
The biggest hit of last year was The Social Network, which is a great movie, but not the kind that does well on high definition. It could be hard for 2012 to eke out a win.

DVD Sales: New Releases are Spreading
There were five new releases to reach the top 30 on this week's DVD sales chart. This includes a new number one selling DVD, Contagion. The film sold 411,000 units during its first week of release generating $6.16 million. The Hangover II slipped to second place with 217,000 units / $2.15 million for the week giving it totals of 3.13 million units / $40.50 million after five. Thanks to a very strong hold, Dolphin Tale climbed to third place with 168,000 units / $2.51 million for the week. After three weeks of release, the film has sold 1.07 million units while generating $16.11 million in sales. The Help was right behind with 160,000 units / $2.71 million for the week and 3.58 million units / $61.28 million after five. Rounding out the top five was Rise of the Planet of the Apes at 148,000 units / $2.22 million for the week. After a month of release, it has sold 1.83 million units while earning $32.60 million in revenue.
Justified: Season Two just missed the top five with 135,000 units, while it was in third place in terms of dollars at $2.70 million. Don't Be Afraid of the Dark was one spot back in seventh place with 119,000 units / $2.01 million. Further down the list we find Shark Night in 13th place with 78,000 units / $1.17 million. I Don't Know How She Does It opened in 14th place with 75,000 units / $1.35 million.

Best Buy once again is touting its “Upgrade and Save” program that lets customers trade a used DVD in its original case for a $5 coupon that can be applied toward the purchase of any Blu-ray priced at $9.99 or more.
The program was heavily promoted in Best Buy’s weekly ad circular, with the coupon-discounted price printed next to all the new-release Blu-rays for Jan. 10. In some cases, this brought the Blu-ray price below that of the DVD version of the same film.
Best Buy’s other big promotion for the week focused on season one discs of HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire.” The chain has an exclusive bonus disc with two historical featurettes and the first episode of the second season, and all purchases of HBO series include a “Game of Thrones” sampler disc. Best Buy also has a “Boardwalk Empire” deck of playing cards for $3.99.
Target’s version of the “Boardwalk Empire” set includes an exclusive set of six postcards featuring imagery from the show.
Target also offered $5 instant savings when the Blu-rays of Killer Elite and Scorpion King 3 were bought together.
Walmart offered a Blu-ray copy of Moneyball with an exclusive bonus disc featuring an episode of MLB Network's "Studio 42 With Bob Costas" devoted to the movie.

Projections: Get Ready to Play 'Moneyball'
16 Jan, 2012
By: John Latchem
a260ac44_Moneyball.jpeg

After getting off to a so-so start, the new year should get a boost from a few high-profile new releases, led by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s Moneyball.
The Brad Pitt starrer based on the famous book about sabermetrics should find itself atop the sales and rental charts its first week in stores.
Also receiving a lot of retail attention among the Jan. 10 releases is HBO’s Boardwalk Empire: The Complete First Season, though it may not move as many units because it's a pricier TV boxed set.
Projected Top 3 Sellers for Week Ending 1/15/2012
1 Moneyball Sony Pictures New
2 Boardwalk Empire: The Complete First Season HBO New
3 Killer Elite Universal New

'Moneyball' Hits a Home Run, Tops Sales and Rental Charts
18 Jan, 2012By: Thomas K. Arnold

Moneyball
The post-holiday new releases continue to trickle in as Hollywood mines its leftover 2011 theatricals for January and February release, amid hopes the home entertainment industry’s so-called “fifth quarter” will prove a fruitful one as consumers cash in gift cards or look for discs to play on their new Blu-ray players.
The big tentpoles were all released in advance of the holidays. And thus it is that a modest theatrical success, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s Moneyball, scored a rare triple play the week ended Jan. 15, debuting at No. 1 on both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart and Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart, as well as Home Media Magazine’s rental chart.
Moneyball, a baseball biodrama starring Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill, grossed $75.4 million in U.S. theaters during the fall. According to Nielsen data, 44% of first-week sales were on Blu-ray Disc.
Bowing at No. 2 on both sales charts was another fall 2011 theatrical, Universal Studios’ Killer Elite, which stars Robert De Niro and earned $25 million at the box office. (Universal is one of the studios that holds back releases from Netflix and Redbox by 28 days, so it didn’t appear on Home Media Research’s Top 20 rentals.) Killer Elite generated 53% of first-week sales from Blu-ray Disc.
And, again on both sales charts, Warner’s Boardwalk Empire: The Complete First Season debuted at No. 3, generating 39% of its total sales from the Blu-ray format.
On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart, the No. 2 spot went to 20th Century Fox’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, fresh off its 28-day rental holdback. The Hangover Part II, the previous week’s top rental, slipped to No. 3.
