This is not the first report I have read where Apple is
planning only making small incremental changes to their
iPhone.

http://www.ijailbreak.com/iphone/the-new-iphone-iphone-5-to-feature-lte-similar-sized-screen-and-fall-2012-release-date/

Sounds more like an iPhone 4SS than an iPhone 5.

I have an iPhone 4 and was hoping to upgrade this year,
but unless there is a bigger screen on the way (which it looks
like there isn't) I may just be waiting another year to upgrade.

That's about the most unreliable source of news I've ever seen ya post. Cmon....
But, if you are pining for a bigger screened iPhone no matter what you are going to be disappointed, no matter who comes up with such a rumor.
I still don't think we will see a smaller iPad either, tho a million places are posting why it makes 'sense'.
Smaller dock connection? Maybe. Would be interesting if Thunderbolt enabled.
LTE? Maybe, but with people burning through data plans like no tomorrow I don't think anyone but geeks will be excited
Bigger screen? No way.
Better camera? Count on it.

Sam,

Let's not get into who is spreading unreliable, factless based information....

I labeled this as RUMOR and its not the only website that has reported
this information over the past few days.

...and many of the rumors have been based on parts that have surfaced.

Let's make it interesting, if apple releases a bigger screened iPhone or a smaller iPad in calendar year 2012 I buy you a new release Blu of your choice up to $30, if not you get me one. You win if either happens. I win if neither does. Deal? The rumors are on your side, right?

Sam...for once...turn off the negativity defense mode.

Where in my post did I say Apple was going to definitely
release a bigger iPhone or smaller iPad?
Where are you fabricating these things?
What I did post was that despite the fact that many had been
anticipating a larger iPhone screen (including myself) to compete
with other phones, the *rumor* is that it isn't happening. This is
based on alleged photographed parts that have shown up -- in the
same way everyone nearly had the iPad 3's specs pinned
down before its release based on photographed parts.

So how is the rumor on my side?

I don't even believe a smaller iPad is forthcoming this year.

What I can bet you is that if Apple releases an iPhone 5 with
the same sized screen and 4G, it isn't going to make people
very happy.

A dud like the iPhone 4S? Or a dud like the new iPad?
Either way, I hope to upgrade this cycle :tu:
How about a dud like in it doesn't offer anything new enough to bother upgrading from a 4 or a 4S. If there is nothing really groundbreaking, other than the addition of 4G LTE, why bother upgrading?

I mean a dud that more and more people keep buying, making Apple the "largest" company in the US.

Why would I upgrade from my iPhone 4? Isn't it obvious? Faster processor (A5x vs A4). 4G vs 3G. Siri. Better Camera. Two-year renewal pricing.

How is this a "dud"?

It's a matter of personal perspective. From yours, those improvements are important enough to warrant an upgrade, therefore it's not a dud.To someone who was expecting a major change to the form factor (i.e. a larger screen) the Iphone5 would be a "dud" because it fails to meet the level of change needed for an upgrade. In my case, a better phone camera would not be a big enough change to warrant upgrading a phone. 4G would only be worth it if I thought that 3G wasn't meeting my needs. I try to minimize my use of cellular data service because we don't have unlimited data plans with the major telecoms in Canada. Use of cellular data services can get expensive fast. I know of at least one case where the bill racked up was 900+ dollars. I had at least one bill higher than 200 and I didn't think that I had used the service that much. A faster processor in a phone is meaningless to me. Most of the apps I have used run just fine and the phone I have doesn't even have a dual core processor. If I was an Apple phone owner none of the features that you listed would raise enough enthusiasm in me to warrant an upgrade, so I would probably consider the Iphone5 to be a "dud".

I didn't upgrade from 4 to 4S. So the 4S is a dud?
I cannot answer that question for you. It is entirely a personal thing to consider whether a device is a dud in one's eyes. If I didn't upgrade from a 4 to a 4S then, from my personal perspective, it is a dud because any changes in it have failed to trigger the need to upgrade. I don't care how many are sold to other people or how successful it is. Using the term "dud" in referring to a device is purely subjective, because it only reflects one's personal disappointment with the device in question.

Ok I got what you are saying. A few things tho:
Apple doesnt build products to compete with other offerings from other companies. Never has. Try to name a single 'me too' product from Apple. They especially dont make copies of shitty product innovations if which making a bigger shitty screen just to be bugger is a prime example.
Two, even if i think the jailbreak guys are right, and in this case i do apparently, judging a product that wont be even announced for three months s a dud based on their jackass speculation makes no sense at all. Its linkbait at best and getting your expectations set by idiots like that is only going to set you up for continuous dissapointment.

Sam,

I think you are taking this a bit too far.

This is a thread clearly labeled RUMOR.

The motivation behind posting this rumor was "what if....."

It was an attempt to promote discussion....on a discussion forum.

Nobody is putting all their eggs into anybody's basket as to whether
the current speculation is true or not.

It's rather funny that you call these guys idiots, yet you admit that
you agree with the rumor.

(and for the record, not the only website reporting this news over the
past week based on surfaced parts)

It is not uncommon for parts to surface 3 months prior to a product
announcement -- especially given the production time involved in
having that product ready.

All that I am saying here is that *if* the next upgrades to the Apple
iPhone consist of 4G and a smaller dock connector, people are going
to be upset. Despite what you feel, I believe many want a larger screen
that doesn't compromise the overall size of the phone. After the small
upgrade from iPhone 4 to 4S, I think the public is hoping for something
a little more revolutionary with the upcoming iPhone 5.

...and how is a larger screen buggier, Sam? Do you know for fact it
would be? What other phone has been reported as being "buggy"
because of its larger screen? This is factless speculation.

You know I love 'yuh, Sam, but rarely can anyone post anything
here without you attempting to tear it apart and call people idiots,
numb nuts, etc. I think I have been rather tolerant seeing my name
prominently displayed in one of your threads labeling me as a "nutjob"
for expressing my beliefs.

Why is everyone here out of sync with the technology world except you?

Because you are thinking of it from a "wouldn't it be cool if" perspective and not in the real world, where developers do this thing called design. Design isn't how something looks but how something WORKS.
And most android phones don't approach mobile from a design centric focus. Where adding 400 different screen sizes to an already shitty ecosystem doesn't screw things up.
Meanwhile, in the iOS ecosystem, design rules all. Making things comfortable to use while also being visually appealing MATTERS. Changing the size on a phone that has been stable for 4+ years where the app makers have carefully crafted their creations based on what works rather than what's cool would be an astronomically dumb decision. Yes, seriously, changing just a half inch or an inch would make a dramatic difference in design with no other payoff than having a moderately larger display which takes more power, processing and other DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS that don't make sense.
There is no such thing as 'no compromises design'. All design is compromise.
There is no good reason to move to bigger screens given the huge negative tradeoffs involved. Apple has been consistently on message here: If you want a bigger screen, get an iPad.
Again, this agrees with the conclusions of the jokers you are referencing. Today. It disagrees with what they said two weeks ago or so you say. They will probably change their minds tomorrow.
And yes, parts surface all the time. Apple tests a million different things because they want to TEST THEIR DESIGNS and see what really works and if it meets their expectations. Unlike the shitty other shops which throw a bunch of crap out on the market and say 'here you pick which one works for you and oh by the way no two of you will think the same so theres no way we can make a great experience." But hey, choice!

I don't understand the rumor or this thread.

"Dud" is perforative term implying the device is a significant failure, deeply disappointing, that it will not sell, that few people will be interested. Examples:
[*]
Blackberry Storm was a dud
[*]
Palm Pre
[*]
HP Palm tablet
[*]
Motorola Xoom

A dud new iPhone would be something like: iPhone 4S relabeled. Literally, no changes to hardware, no 4G, no processor or graphics upgrades.

What we're likely to get, and certainly not contradicted by this "rumor":
[*]
A5 -> A5x
[*]
3G -> LTE
[*]
512 GB -> 1 GB RAM
[*]
Similar battery life even with LTE
[*]
iOS5 -> iOS6

How is this a "dud"? What part of the rumor being true would make the iPhone look like a dud?

Dave,

Critically, iPhone 4S was blasted for its incremental upgrades.

However, it sold in records.

Those specs that you listed are worthy, but to some, just minor
speedbumps.

The iPhone 4 is still a very fast device. It was a huge step up
from the iPhone 3.

However, I am not certain how many people are going to be
"woo'd" by a faster processor and LTE (that isn't available in
all areas -- won't be for the next two years -- and eats up data
plans rather quickly).

We can sit here and debate what a "dud" means to you vs.
what it means to me or anyone else. We will never come to
an agreement. Everyone has their own idea of what the next
iPhone should be.

However, being that buying one of these phones puts one in
a 2-year contract, it means that very careful consideration must
be given to the next phone purchase that is going to stay with
that individual for that time period.

While it's almost impossible to time which Apple products will be
totally revamped in the next upgrade, I can't blame people for
waiting these upgrades out until they find what they are looking for.

Speaking for myself and friends I have talked with who own
the iPhone 4 --- thus far iPhone 5 isn't looking very intriguing.
The fact that there was no iPhone 5 last year and it simply became
the 4S, many felt that this year's release would be revolutionary.
Perhaps a cradled design. Perhaps a bigger screen.

We can sit here and again debate what Apple would and would
not do as far as design and revolutionizing their products, but
in the end NOBODY knows their intentions nor what tricks they
may pull out of their hat.

Really, I think people who are expecting something more revolutionary
in the next iPhone are ultimately going to be disappointed -- that is, if
the rumors are true.

Of course, Dave, everything we talk about here is speculative. These
are personal opinions.

Speculation is fun. I was thinking it was time to start the speculation of the new iPhone (because that's what I think the name will be) and iOS6.

What puts me off here? I think we -- I think I -- deserve better than LINK-BAIT! thread titles.

I went from the iPhone 3GS to the iPhone 4S and I'm very happy. The new iPhone whatever it will be I believe we are still aways out before we see accurate rummors. I would say when we start reading about things in June we will have a better idea. I won't be buying this version waiting until next. This was the iPad year. I do agree we will see iOS 6 and a faster processor but beyond that I think it is a little to soon to firm up.

Whose content is formed from links to people with semi-legal backgrounds.
I'd be embarrassed to even link to them saying here's what these idiots think as opposed to citing them as insiders with anything more than speculation.

Also, critically blasted by whom? Few in the mainstream press but tons of people suckered in by link bait speculation expecting unreasonable things like ultra slim body, LTE last year when no chipsets supported it, or bigger screens. It's a vicious circle.
