Final Piece... Which Subwoofer would you get? (1 Viewer)

Hello All, Looking at upgrading my home theater and the last thing I need to pick out is the subwoofer. Don't really play music all that loud so really looking for something for TV/Movies. Definitely cross the Polk off your list. I've owned it, and even at that price, it is just underpowered and has pretty much no extension at all. I'd say you are safe with the BIC. Thanks for the heads up John on the Polk, now with the Daytons will I see a big difference between the newer and older model?

The specs are very similar between the old and new, so I don't think the output or extension will be much different. I think the new model is more of a "refresher" than a redesign. Neither digs very low either, both are good to 25Hz, but in the price range that's par for the course. The BIC may have more peak power as far as I can tell (but also costs a bit more), so it may have a bit more output than the Daytons, but it also says 25Hz on the bottom end. The BIC has plenty of favorable reviews as well, which is why I say it is a safe bet. The Dayton subs are well known among the forum communities also when it comes to budget subs; aka had you not provided the BIC in your OP, it and the Daytons are what I would have recommended looking into

Sorry if this is a dumb question but for watching movies/TV will the less peak power with the Daytons have a big impact?

No, for TV, peak output won't make a ton of difference. Audio quality has definitely improved recently with broadcast TV, and Cable can be quite good, but I don't think there will be a difference that you'd say "woulda, shoulda coulda". To really step up in performance, you're going to have to spend more, so this is a good place to start.

Thanks, I should have noted that my current system is a Panasonic SA-HT290 that I bought back in the early 90's so I am hoping this will be an improvement

At your budget, I wouldn't think twice about buying that BIC. In fact, I can't even build a good sub for that price. Buy it and enjoy.

All I could find were images, but I'd say any of these will be an improvement. They probably won't knock pictures off your wall, but they should add enough grunt on the bottom end to make things entertaining.

Well I just got off the phome with my wife, aka the boss, and I have a new budget of $150 total for the sub, with this new info what would you get?

I vote Velodyne VX 11 (I MAY be biased.. )

Neither of those seem to fit his under $150 budget in a quick check on the VX-11. I wouldn't recommend any of Polk's PSW subs personally.

I saw it for 159 on Amazon, close enough right..? Jeff, I would suggest saving up more, and buying a decent sub, instead of getting a entry level sub. I think it'll be better in the long run.

May have been at the time you suggested, but I checked that day and they were $199.
