I may be wrong about this, but usually February has been

the time period when Apple releases its new line of Macbook Pros.

However, a refresh was done late last year, if I remember correctly.

In fact, just received this month's issue of Mac Life that is doing a

review on the new Macbook Pro.

I have been holding off buying a new laptop hoping this would be

the year Apple does a total revamp on their Macbook Pro line. From

all the rumors suggest, this will be the year of the revamped line.

When would we most likely expect to hear announcements?

I believe Intel's Ivy Bridge desktop and mobile CPUs are due the first week of April. So maybe iMac and MacBook Pro updates around that time?   -KeithP

MacRumors shows MBP updates being 9+ months apart, with the last one in October. So there might be another one until this Summer or Fall. http://buyersguide.m...om/#MacBook_Pro   But maybe that doesn't include incremental updates? MacRumors also has Ivy Bridge suggested for APril 8. And "Retina" screen rumors. http://macbookpro.macrumors.com/

October was a spec bump not a feature bump Those can be as short as 5 months before next release.

I have got money stowed away awaiting the new Macbook Pro.   Going to go all out on this one including a SSD drive.   C'mon, Apple, make your announcement soon!

Time will tell if buying a physical disk is even an option Ron. I hope it is NOT. ;) Not sure if I'll move back to the MBP or not full time when I'm moved in, the Air really is all I need out of a travel computer and I keep hoping that a Mac Pro refresh hits soon. If they really do have an air-ified MBP with HiDPI that might change my mind but we will see. Either way I hardly use my MBP now that I have the air.... I've moved my sale hijack to it's own thread here: http://www.hometheat...-ram-very-clean

This is GREAT news with the exception that it will be a longer  wait for the 17-inch version which is what I have my heart set on.

AppleInsider.com is reporting Intel's new chips will be 6-8 weeks late.

http://www.appleinsi...weeks_late.html

Here is the original story: http://www.ft.com/cm...t#axzz1nY3dIy1U

Quote:

...In his first interview to discuss Intel’s business in China, Mr Maloney told the Financial Times that the start of sales of machines equipped with Ivy Bridge – the 22nm processor set to succeed Sandy Bridge in notebooks this year – had been pushed back from April. “I think maybe it’s June now,” he said.

Mr Maloney said the adjustment was not caused by a lack of demand but came because of the new manufacturing process needed to make the smaller chips.

So maybe it won't be the full eight weeks or maybe it will end up being longer.

Sold my early 2011 17" on ebay last night for about a $600 hit, the guy got a great deal. I don't need anything more powerful than the 13" with SSD, it chew through video and games like a champ. But now I'm set if they make a 15" air-ified MBP in the april time frame I'll upgrade my 13to that. And if not this will be my bank for my next desktop.

Yet another new rumor, targeting April for potential release.

So I've come full circle on my personal stance on the optical drive. I'm now ready to ditch it completely and go SSD as well. I just need a little more horsepower than the existing Airs, but portability is now king as far as what my needs are for my new laptop. I'd love a lighter MBP, weighing in at 4lbs or less, with no CD drive, SSD HD and next gen chips, with a dedicated GPU. Would be awesome to get retina display, or at least the "higher def 15" MBP screen" of 1680x1050 or 1920x1200 as a default for a 15" screen rather than an add-on option (or only available on the 17" as is the case with 1920x1200).

I am going to hold out for the new 17" Macbook Pro.   With luck it will have the same slim-form factor as the other Pros being introduced.   I have just gotten so used to my 17" display. Really  love it to the point that I don't want to step down in size.

I thought the same until I got the 13" air. It's fine. 15 will be even better but the weight for the 17 was overkill for how I used it. I still have my 17" Alienware but can't wait to stop traveling and turn that into a desktop too.

I would consider an "air" but I certainly don't want 13"   My greatest concern is movie editing.  I do a lot of it on my Macbook Pro using iMovie.  Right now I have a 2.8 Core Duo and it struggles with encodes (though remarkably, manages to do them).  I cannot multitask when encoding.   I need a powerhouse processor in my laptop to speed up any movie encoding and allow me to do a small amount of multitasking such as reading mail or browsing the web.   On my iMac desktop I have an i7 processor and I have no problems encoding and multitasking.   If the "air" is powerful enough to do what I need it to do, I may consider it.   It does seem that eventually the "air" and the Pros will become one.

Yeah the throttled down CPUs and integrated graphics for the Air was a deal breaker for me as well. I love the light weight, but I'd love a 15" version that gave us a more powerful CPU, discrete GPU, and more battery to compensate for the power draw, in exchange for a few more ounces. I'm already used to lugging around a 5.5 lbs. MBP so even going down to 4lbs would seem like a feather-weight in comparison! :D Not sure if this is doable (if it is, the engineers at Apple could figure it out) but ideally here' s what I'd want in a new 15" Macbook Pro "light" or Macbook Air "pro". 15" display with minimum 1680x1050, prefereably 1900x1200 or retina display. Latest quad core Sandy or Ivy Bridge mobile processors Discrete GPU (not sure what the latest NVidia or ATI models are) 256GB SSD (can be form factor of the Air hard drives as opposed to SSD SATA drive if it keeps costs down) no optical drive 5 hour or better battery life under moderate use USB3 or TBolt 4lbs I'd be willing to pay MBP money for that
