I'm not feeling it. $50 more than the Kindle and very little to show for it.
I do note that it has 1gb or RAM which is great for multiple tabs and could be great for gaming, but I didnt see what GPU it's using.
And for those who pooh-poohed the Apple decision to not double the RAM in the iPhone4s I'll just note that this one has double the RAM of the kindle and 1 hour more (predicted, anyway) battery life.

Interesting call that they're making to keep the $250 price for the new device. I guess they're hoping to convince people that this is a better value proposition than the $200 Kindle Fire -- that and/or for this to be enough to keep existing Nook customers in the Nook family. Maybe they're also thinking people will opt to become B&N members, if they haven't already, and get the 10%(?) discount for it. If you're going to get the Nook, you might as well get their membership anyway even though there's no other membership discounts for Nook stuff/content.

Anyway, since my wife already has a Nook Color, I might actually consider adding the Nook Tablet instead of the Kindle Fire since I don't care for the storage limitation of Amazon's offering (and am not exactly a fan of streaming). Presumably, I can still root the new tablet to install additional non-sanctioned apps, if need be. Wonder what flavor Android they're using for the NT (and the subsequent update for the older NC) -- presumably, that's how they're getting at least part of the battery performance improvement while making the device thinner/lighter.

Noticed that the PR actually has a brief blurb or so about Nook Cloud(!), but no idea what that actually means in practice other than the aforementioned synching feature (presumably to match Amazon's oft-touted synch feature). Have no idea if that's been in place for some time or is actually something new for them.

There's also mention of Flixster w/ UltraViolet(?!). Is that the same Flixster as the web-based, movie info app that's owned by Amazon now? OR something else? Anyway, it's the mention of UV that's most interesting there. I noticed that the Harry Potter BD combo pack comes w/ UV digital copy, so will that actually work/play on the NT (and maybe also the old NC upon software update)? Would be nice if so although it would be much better if I can get old DCs from various family-oriented BD combo packs I own converted to UV DCs as well, especially the Disney ones.

I guess we'll find out (about the NT) soon enough since it's slated for release next week...

If you copy the wmv version directly to the Android device, it will play using a 3rd party video player like MX Player (you don't even have to strip the DRM). I don't think that app is in the Amazon Market, so if you want to do stuff like that, a rooted Nook Tablet is a better bet (the sd card expansion doesn't hurt either).

Other than the more space and expandable, I'm not seeing why I would cancel my Fire order. I might want to watch things through the amazon streaming option too so that's another vote for Fire for me.

I'm not shopping for either one, but with these devices I follow the herd. Kindle is more popular and has a better "ecosystem" and is $50 cheaper than the Nook. That alone would push me to buy the Fire or Kindle. But, since I've already got a Kindle SO, I'd stay in the Amazon system for compatibility.

In contrast: I have a friend with a Nook COlor who bought it for rooting, to get extra features.

Another friend bought a NC because's B&N's store presence -- technical support -- was important. She viewed buying from Amazon too risky if she needed support.

So I don't really think these are DOA, but I feel Amazon retains the lead.

It's very likely the Nook will be rooted before it even hits the market. Obviously, there's nothing like an OOTB experience, and I am not saying that rooting is for most people, but if you are willing to root, you will get more out of the Nook Tablet than the Fire. Is it worth the $50? Absolutely.

Once you root, you will be able to access the Android Market and the Amazon Market. So there won't really be anything on a feature level that's exclusive to the Fire.

Posters on Android forums make up less then 1% of the user base. Millions of users are not rooting their device. You know the fastest market of sales for iPad/etc. ? It's people over 60, who are buying it as readers and because it's easier then a computer etc. Think any of them are rooting/etc.

Or, even those who could.. do you think most of us have enough time?

Not sure exactly where I said that most Android users were doing this. I was actually replying to Man, who rooted his Nook Color.

Thanks, Hanson, although I still haven't actually bothered to root my wife's NC yet -- she doesn't see a need for that herself. I probably would've done it already if it was my own NC although I'd much rather not have to do that...

The mobile copies are 700 mb and the PC copies are 1.4 gb. Both sizes can easily be copied wirelessly.

Hmmm... I guess the PC WMVs are somewhat similar to the iTunes ones then although I notice the iTunes ones can vary a lot -- the ones I've tried range from ~1GB to ~2GB, and most (all?) of them are
