As we've pointed out here, HD-DVD is the one dead format you can.. well, do what you want. But finding the drives and means to take care of it.. HARD! Well, not today!!

Today, at least here in KC, and asking store reps this should be going at all Microcenter stores, they have a "blowout" bin of "Refurbished" rom drives... check them. Because for $14.95, you can grab a Bluray/HD-DVD Combo Drive (DVD Writer as well!).

If you're thinking now is the time to preserve your HD-DVD archive and you just haven't found a way, $14.95 is nothing to ask to get you started.. I picked up four just to have them around. $50 for 4? Hell.. let the conversion begin!

In-store only? I don't live near a Microcenter (at least, not that I'm aware of), but this sounds like a heck of a deal!

Good timing for me! I picked up a few (and sent out one belatedly today), and from Craigslist I picked up 50 (FIFTY) HD-DVD discs, the majority of them still in shrink wrap for $1 a piece. Like Black Friday early! A lot of titles I'm "eh" but some I'm glad to have in my collection, and at $1, I can't beat the deal (Wyatt Earp, Derailed, Brave One, Shining, Cinderella Man, Ultimate Matrix, Backdraft) Just too good of a deal $50 for 50 discs.

I have to admit, this is generally kicking ass. I am picking up HD-DVDs at about 50 cents to $1 a pop on Craigslist.. cheaper then DVD.. completely full of win. Just picked up the Jack Ryan Collection for $7.

Unhooked my HD-DVD add-on drive from my Xbox 360 and hooked it up to my newly-built HTPC. I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to archive all of my HD-DVDs, with the exception of one episode each from Planet Earth discs 2 and 4, The Interpreter, and my NIN: Beside You in Time concert disc. Apparently, the NIN concert is 1080i VC-1, which is known to have issues when archiving. The Interpreter is a "problem disc" for many, tooo. The Planet Earth episodes might be due to disc issues... wonder if trying them with a different drive would help.

So far, I've just tested all my MKVs in Graphstudio w/ my PC monitor. Looking forward to making sure they play nice via Windows Media Center on my bedroom TV. This is gonna be fun... :)
