I have plugged unplugged and switched the dvd to read all channels and I am getting no sound, what am i missing here?

Did you mean to say Blu-ray player, rather than DVD player?
If you are talking about an upconverting DVD player, I'm pretty certain DVD players don't output audio via HDMI, only video. For a DVD player, you would need to run a digital optical or coaxial connection for audio.
If you are talking about a Blu-ray player, please provide the model number.

why would they put an hdmi output for it i dont get that. and no its a dvd player.

and how would you make an hdmi and a coax work when you can only choose one input setting. HDMI AV1 etc
