From the SMT (Society of Music Theory) Listserv:

I am sorry to report that Milton Babbitt passed away this morning. He was both esteemed and beloved, and will be very much missed.

Our beloved friend, colleague, and teacher to all of us, Milton Babbitt passed away this morning, peacefully and lucid until the end.  A towering figure in music theory, in American music, and in music, his life and work touched all of us and will always remain with us.  Arrangements are underway for a memorial service.

I studied Babbitt's work while he was at Princeton.  The work of Babbitt, Edward T. Cone, and their school was influential in my theoretical training.
