I went to turn on my receiver to watch a dvd and Protect is flashing.

No sound will not come on.

I looked in the manual and it says that it means that there is a short somewhere.

I disconnect each speaker one by one and tried to turn on the receiver but I always got the Protect message.

Anyone know what I can do to fix this problem ?

Thank you.

Check the speaker connections again.  That should indicate exactly what you say.  There is a possibility the logic of the receiver has gotten "stuck" which can happen with sophisticated electronics.  Usually you can fix that by unplugging the receiver power cord (turning it off does NOT work) for a few minutes, then plugging it back in.

Thanks John.

I'll try unpugging it.

I'll check the speaker connections again too.

If neither work, is there anything else it can be ?

Yeah, since you already checked the speaker wires, you might as well try unplugging it first.

Also, I can't think of anything else other than a defect in the receiver, except maybe a problem with the power line, but the odds of that are minute.

I unplugged all of the wires from the receiver, unplugged it (overnight) and then plugged it into a different outlet this moring.

I'm still getting the Protect message.

I assume the receiver is shot. It's over 15 years old.

If it's a Denon, the flashing PROTECT means it has detected one of these three things:  (1) A full loop back (cables connected incorrectly, looping back to receiver); (2) Overheat or (3) you have amp failure... at which point, you'd need to send it in to Denon for fix.. if it's another receiver, the only thing I can think of is a hardware failure.

Alex, you are saying that nothing is connected to it and it's still saying "Protect"?  Yeah, I think it's shot.  Probably not worth fixing.
