Apple Remote Desktop is also only $79.99 through the app store.

As far as I'm concerned, it's a damned shame that a field as potentially dynamic and vital as journalism should be overrun with dullards, bums, and hacks, hag-ridden with myopia, apathy, and complacence, and generally stuck in a bog of stagnant mediocrity. - Hunter S. Thompson, 1958, from cover letter he wrote for a newspaper job.

This is KEY:

"Apps from the Mac App Store may be used on any Macs that you own or control for your personal use." Emphasis: Any. Not three Macs, or five or any other number.

Game changing.

Looked at the App Store. I like the look and feel a lot. And then I removed it immediately from my dock and doubt I'll return to it for a year or more, not until iWork or iLife 2012 appear. I wish it had been part of the Mac experience when I first switched, three years ago. But now I have a pretty mature selection of programs, I don't have much need for an App Store.

And what apps I am buying this week (Parallels Upgrade, Quicken for Windows, Windows 7) are unlikely to be in the App Store anytime soon  ;)

Providing household-wide program usage is interesting: there goes Family Packs of iLife and iWork. How about Family Pack for OS 10.7?

Mashable agrees, this changes everything:

BTW Apple announced 1 million downloads first day, which seems low.

I wish I could convert my existing apps to MAS licenses. Having lived with the iPhone way for six months, it's obviously a better way to buy and manage software. I love the auto-update system that's automatic and  independent of actually running software. I love "home sharing"; buy an app for myself and my wife gets it automatically on her system. But I've long since Pixelmator, VectorDesigner, CoverSutra, iLife, iWork and so on, so I won't get this great new way of managing and updating apps. And I'm not going to rebuy them just for that.

MAS is great for the new user. It's great for the frequent buyer. Not sure yet if it will do much for me in the short term.

I'm jealous of those buying their first Mac and starting off with the Mac App Store. :)

Pixelmator is now MAS only. Which explains why MAS version is 1.6.4, while mine is a slightly lower 1.6.2 with no updates available. It would see my Pixelmator updates have come to an end.

Will the Mac App Store decimate bundling companies like MacHeist?

Yes, yes it will. And developers will hustle to build improvements at lower prices that move customers to MAS for apps in their existing libraries. They announced MAS pixelmator will get 2.0 for free, taking the pain off for those who rebuy, at half price. About as good a compromise as you will get.

Yeah, the Bundle guys are probably tearing their hair out.

I didn't see the note about free upgrade to Pixelmator. Now, since I bought it originally through a MacHeist, I'm not in a hurry to spend $30 on a re-buy :)

I'm probably going to buy PhoneView; alas it's not available in MAS. Neither is Firefox or Chrome. I'd like to see things like that in there solely for the simplified update process.

Saw that. I've got CoverSutra, again from a MacHeist, and it's at 2.2. I don't care the upgrade kerfuffle personally (having gotten it from a bundle).

The developer is handling the situation poorly -- how do you forget your own licensing agreement? -- but regardless, the MAS is a sea change and can be expected to cause hiccups and re-orientations by small developers.

And thinking of handy music tools, I just found that "I Love Stars" is now in the Mac App Store for $0.99. I've had the free version for the past year or so; it's a super handy utility for getting music rated as it plays. I may have to pay the $0.99 to support the developer.

Hmm...here's a MAS weakness: no Wishlist as in iTunes. I like to put interesting apps on the  Wishlist for future purchase. That way when I find something that looks nice, but I'm not ready to spend the money, I wishlist it and am reminded of it later when I've got some cash to burn.

In the absence of the Pinball Pro series (Classic Mac OS X) and the LittleWing pinball games, the Mac has been hurting for pinball games.

So it was nice to see that 'Pinball HD' has been ported from the iPhone/iPod Touch to the Mac.

Note that the default camera view is good for seeing close-ups of the table, but not so good for playing the game.  Use 'c' to toggle between the three views.

So why do I want clipstart when I have iPhoto and iMovie? Especially for $29?

Maybe I don't do enough video and sharing for that sort of app to help me.
