What I want to see released on Blu-Ray next year:


-Housekeeping(1988)

-Jurassic Park(1993)


-Fright Night(1985)


-John Hughes movies(unreleased Paramount titles)

Planes, Trains, Automobiles, Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful etc.


-Star Trek TNG(seasons 1, and 2)


-The Year of Living Dangerously(1982)


-Ordinary People(1980...in a special edition)


What I predict will be released:


-Jurassic Park trilogy


-Fright Night


-Star Trek TNG season 1.



So, what do you want to see in 2011?

Well Citizen Kane in 2011 is muted, but I'd sure like to (finally) see The Magnificent Ambersons given a proper release, ideally with Rick Schmidlin-type reconstruction of the original version.


Ben Hur is also slated for 2011, but if it doesn't include the 1925 version in high def, it'll be a deal breaker for me.


I'd love to see Lawrence of Arabia on blu, but given the studios GD predilection for all these silly anniversaries, I won't be expecting that one until 2012 at least.


Finally, I received word from Criterion's Jon Mulvaney that "The Passion of Joan of Arc," is "possible" in 2011, and I fervently hope this will bear out. That film is my all time favorite, and I've longed for a blu-ray to replace my well worn Criterion DVD version. It was a fine release to be sure, but it's ten years old, and single layered DVD, so I'm sure all the latest advances could produce an even better transfer than we've ever seen before!

I always enjoy a wish list. Just thinking about favorite films is a fun activity. I haven't been keeping up with confirmed or rumored 2011 releases, but here are some films I'd love to see on Blu-ray (arranged alphabetically):

I expect both of those before '11 is over.


Aren't we also due for a Fred & Ginger release?


I would love to see 1776 this coming July 4th, but I won't be surprised to see them wait for the anniversary year. Disappointed a little, but not surprised.


As far as other Sony owned titles go, Taxi Driver is overdue. I would also like to think they are finally going to kick out some of the 4:3 B&W classics they have like Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, It Happened One Night, Gilda, etc.



Chinatown is overdue, but who knows whats going on in Paramount's rock-head. Thank God they at least are licensing stuff.


Criterion has become pretty bullish on Bd in 2010, so I'm guessing that quite a few of the really exciting catalog releases (for film buffs) from MGM, Universal, Fox, and Paramount, will be released by them. Of what they already have rights to, what I hope to get sooner rather than later are the Universal Doug Sirks. All That Heaven Allows and Magnificent Obsession especially.


As much as I would love to see it, I'm not holding my breath for All That Jazz anytime soon. I think a much safer bet would be something like Miller's Crossing, which might have just a little more appeal to the apparently still dominant 15-35 demo.

Ben Hur and The Ten Commandments should be out by March, Cleopatra - will look incrediable if the recent 70MM screenings are any indication.


The Big Country was recently remastered and I was told it looks much better then the DVD - this is from MGM so it may take a while until they get their finances in order

I almost feel that if they don't get Ambersons out at the same time as Kane's release we may never get it. It's been, what, 7-8 years since they first stated their plans to release it on DVD?

I predict that Universal will finally open their catalog of Spielberg titles, giving us either Jaws or Jurassic Park, but not both.


My biggest want, that I don't think will happen, is to get a nice 4-pack of the Reeve Superman movies (including all versions of the movies that were offered in the 2006 DVD set via seamless branching).

Spielberg is still going to be a slow go. I think

we will see at least one of his titles next year (the

most obvious one) but there certainly won't be an

onslaught of them for a while to come it seems.


Also, I would not expect Indiana Jones next year.

That's disappointing to hear. The Indy part doesn't surprise me, since we are getting Star Wars, but I hoped that Universal having all of those other catalog titles on the way by early 2010 meant that Q3 and Q4 would start to get into Spielberg's big hits. Since I doubt we'll see it soon, I hope we at least get E.T. for the 30th anniversary in 2012.
