Sony has listed 100 films on their website on a Made-To-Order basis.

The pricing is rather high for DVDr's, but I am hoping there will be coupon offerings coming, similar to the Warner Archive.

There listing is a bit confusing as when you click on a title, they often have the aspect ratio wrong or listing an old black and white film as color, but I am fairly certain the titles will be in their original aspect ratio.

So if anyone finds coupon codes or such, I and others would appreciate posting that information. There are probably 15 titles I would really want from this first batch. Judging on how these films look on TCM, they should be superb quality.

I started a thead just like this one, but inadvertantly put it in the wrong category, the TV On DVD And Blu-Ray Category. I wonder if they can be merged. DEEP DISCOUNT DVD and CRITICS CHOICE VIDEO is also carrying them. Those damn prices are the only drawback.

There are a few other glitches on the site. The clip for "Synanon" is actually a clip for "The Take". And the clip on "The Take" page is a clip for "Valley of the Dragons" (a title that was included on the leaked info a week or so back, but is not yet available for purchase on the Sony site).

I'd like more details about how often they will add new titles. All that's said is "every month." I wonder if it will be once or several times a month and if there will be a specific date of the month?

Another sad day, as one of the only studios that was still releasing retail box sets turns to a MOD program featuring high prices, "as is" quality, and DVD-rs. Ah, the precedent set by the good ol' Warner Archive.
Why couldn't companies wait to launch their MOD programs until they have the technology to guarantee at least a new digital telecine of each and every film they release? Now for most of the obscure titles, we'll be stuck with transfers from the 1980s, like in the Warner program.

Won't this increase the studios monthly output by quite a bit when it comes to back catalogue? I'm looking forward to several on the list.

Agreed. Warner has put out close to 700 catalog titles in a year and a half - that would have taken over 20 years if they kept to their old pressed schedule. And they are still rolling strong. And now 100 Sony titles right off the bat, and supposedly more to come every month. Sure, there are a few that we may have hoped for a pressed restored release, but most catalog titles simply would never make it out in any of our lifetimes if it wasn't for these MOD programs. I don't want to wait 50 more years for Sony to MAYBE get around to a 'proper' dvd release of MIND OF MR. SOAMES. First of all, I'll be dead by then. I guess as you get older, you just realize it's more about the films themselves and not how many scratches have been removed and how pristine the transfer is. We've all heard the pricing debate and all that a million times, but that's just the reality of these programs. I wish they were cheaper, but I wish gas was cheaper, too. There are close to 20 titles in this first batch that I want and I'm glad I won't be dead before I get to see any of these films again. Bring on more!

Anybody got a list of the genre titles they own? I'd like to get a feel of what kind of Sci-Fi, Horror, Fantasy, etc, movies that might make their program.

Why assume that the Sony titles have transfers from the '80s? Sony has been systematically digitally restoring their entire back catalogue for TV and home video. The transfers of the older films that have run on TCM have been outstanding, and these new MOD discs are labeled as "remastered." I'd wait until people see some of the discs before you judge their quality.

Hopefully Sony starts circulating some discount coupons -- $20 a pop for a Jungle Jim movie just ain't right! I wish they would've put those into double features for the same price.

I don't think I've seen a single bad Colpix film print-wise from TCM,Encore,or Drive-in Classics Canada - so there's a chance someone finally got MOD "right" :)

Now if they'd only put out the Charlie Chase and Solo Stooge Shorts :)

My experiences with this type of format are in the form of THE WHITE BUFFALO and A RETURN TO SALEM'S LOT, both of which I bought this summer. The transfer on the former looked damn good, sure there was some grain in two of the scenes, but colors were sharp, the audio, on the other hand, could have used some punching up. Overall, though, I don't have a problem with it. Same goes for the latter, grain, yes, but some of that I dealt with by putting on the Noise Reduction feature. When I initially got it, the dvd was defective, it froze every few minutes, but to Warner's credit when I emailed them about it, they replaced it at no extra charge. So, I have to say, so far, I have yet to get seriously burned by a studio's DVD-R title.

As I mentioned before, the only drawback to them are the prices, which is why the titles I have sitting on my wish list over at Warner's will continue to sit for some time to come.

Well, they all say "remastered" in the description and judging how well these films, or the ones that have played, look on TCM, I would say they are truly DVD quality in most cases. I have had very few problems with DVD-r, but I agree the price is still about 5 dollars to much for comfort.

I see that A STUDY IN TERROR, rumored to be coming to commercial DVD just ahead of the Robert Downey Jr. SHERLOCK HOLMES, has now been relegated to MOD. That would still be okay with me, but nowhere in the descriptions does it tell me if this is an anamorphic print. It does say "Newly Remastered" and "1.85:1." But I already have a 1.85:1 letterbox DVD from the UK, and would only buy this again if it's enhanced.

I have some information for all of you from a
very reliable resource.

The issues with the aspects ratios and other
things like wrong clips playing are not oversights
but software glitches and corrupted files that are
going to be corrected over the next few days.

All titles are in their correct aspect ratio and
no old masters were used on any title.
