There are multitudes of Kubrick fans out here wondering why you are hesitating to produce a Blu-ray edition of Barry Lyndon (as well as Lolita, but that is for another thread).

We many, many admirers of this film believe it to be one of most beautifully-photographed in film history, right alongside Days Of Heaven, The Leopard, Black Narcissus, The Red Shoes, The Third Man, and your own Dr. Zhivago, all of which you are obviously aware are availble on Blu. Lyndon cries out for high definition. That you considered only this and Lolita as unworthy of inclusion among your Kubrick Blu-ray releases has us all scratching our heads... So, they didn't make as much at the B.O. during their initial releases as the other four. When has that ever stopped you before? You have time and time again given us amazing releases of films that were not terribly popular theatrically but which have grown massive followings since.

Please.

I'm sure Warner will get around to releasing both Barry Lyndon and Lolita the next time through their Kubrick promotional cycle. The last time in 2007 was when the released the other five (2001, Clockwork, Shining, FMJ, EWS), and it was quite the undertaking: five catalog titles on both BD and HD-DVD, as well as international versions on both formats. And DVDs.

And isn't there at least one or two other threads already saying this?

I add my plea to the chorus.

A featurette on Kubrick's unique method of shooting this film would not be out of place.

I would prefer this sooner than later, I also would only want it if it is presented in the best possible quality possible for the film. If that means waiting for a full restoration, so be it.

Going by publicly-available metrics -- number of IMDB reviews, number of Netflix reviews, Amazon sales rank -- 2001, The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, and Full Metal Jacket are 5-20 times more popular than Lolita or Barry Lyndon.

There's nothing "unworthy" about the film. It's not a personal or artistic judgment -- it's just business. For better or worse, those other Kubrick films have broader appeal than Lolita or Barry Lyndon. The more popular titles get released first.

It'll come out on Blu-Ray. Eventually.

Though it doesn't replace a great Blu-ray release, I feel it's worth mentioning that Warner has provided an HD version of the film for Netflix streaming. No such luck for Lolita, though.

From today's Bits rumor mill!!

http://www.thedigitalbits.com/rumormill.html#082010

So a lot of you have probably been wondering, where are Warner's Blu-rays ofLolita and Barry Lyndon?
Well... that's a question we here at The Bits have been asking the folks at Warner Home Video for months now. And today, they surprised us with an answer! Yes, both Lolita and Barry Lyndon are currently being prepared for Blu-ray Disc release by the studio in 2011. And here's the even better news: They hinted that the films are going to be available both as singles AND as part of a new Stanley Kubrick Blu-ray Collection! We're waiting on more details, and no doubt it will be a while before the release gets officially announced, but it appears that Warner plans to really do their Kubrick catalog up right on Blu-ray in the new year!

I think dancing bananas are in order here

Excellent news. Especially with Paths of Glory, and hopefully The Killing and Killer's Kiss coming from Criterion. If only Universal would re-do Spartacus, and I'm a happy fan.

Hopefully, the new Stanley Kubrick Set won't be more than the existing BDs slapped together, otherwise I'd be force to double dip on all the other Kubrick titles.

I'd put big money on Warner re-using the already released BDs of the other 5 titles in that set. They will not be re-doing the other five on films again on Blu, and you can take that to the bank.

As for Barry Lyndon and Lolita - SOLD!

If they're smart (well, really, if I'm lucky), they'll stock the set with Blu-Ray editions of the full frame versions of The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, and Eyes Wide Shut. I don't want to open up that whole can of worms, in the end, it's a personal preference. And I loooovve the full frame versions. But since upgrading to an HD set, the old transfers don't quite hold up as well.

But Barry Lyndon on Blu-Ray alone is enough to make me beyond happy. My second-favorite film of all time, that one.

Yes, I just saw the Bits post, and now of course wish I'd held off starting the thread for a couple of days... But I'm deliriously happy to hear the news. Sorry if the thread is redundant.
