For whatever dumb reason there is no way to star a song using keyboard shortcuts in the iTunes library.  Don Quixote here wants to go through all the multi thousands of songs in his library in one fell swoop tagging or skipping them one at a time.

Down to go to the next song without tagging.

Key + 1 to tag a song as 1 star as one i want to play very infrequently

Key + 5 to tag a song as 5 stars, one I want to swoop up and put in a playlist as my favorites.

Any suggestions?

Not a solution, but a handy and fun tool: I Love Stars

I saw that but that only seems to help folks rate songs when iTunes isn't visible. I can't believe what I want is so elusive

Yes, it's a little tool to help you rate songs when they're playing in the background.

I made a smartplaylist of all unrated songs. However, when you rate a song, it falls out of the smartplaylist and the playlist stops playing (instead of continuing to the next song). So that didn't work as a method to go through all unrated songs.

It's a fun app I keep running, to remind me of unrated songs when the pop up.
