Rawhide is definitely stalled out at the moment. I'd look for the Fugitive's final season to be released later this year (in 2 parts, of course). Not sure about Streets of SF.
Gary "I'm biding my time waiting for Encore Western to start airing Rawhide so I can get them that way" O.

I agree. Once they start on Encore, I'll pick them up myself from there. Too bad they began leaving their network bug on the screen throughout the whole show. Up until a year ago, they would stick it on for about :15 every so often and that was it. Oh well, nothing we can do about it. It's a shame that none of the other Encore networks run any series anymore. I know in the 90s, Encore Mystery ran a bunch of shows, like Name of the Game, Mike Hammer, Alfred Hitchcock Hour, etc.

Good news, Rawhide fans: season 4 is coming out 9/29/10 in Australia. Gary, I know that you'll be happy to hear this (unless your friend at CBS , uh, "crystal ball", I mean, has given you reason to believe that it's forthcoming domestically).

Encore also airs the occasional syndicated version. Recently they showed the Have Gun - Will Travel episode "Odds for Big Red," and it ran for only 22 minutes. I pulled out my Columbia House VHS tape and immediately saw that the Encore version was missing about 3 1/2 minutes of footage. Encore Westerns also skipped the first episode of Season Five of HGWT, an episode called "The Vigil."

Still, it's better than nothing. I have used Encore Westerns to record the entire series of Maverick and Bat Masterson, and also to record all of the episodes of Cheyenne which haven't been released on DVD.

LOL, Todd. No, I don't have any sources concerning Australian releases. Any tidbits I get only concern R1 releases when it comes to CBS/P. If the trade off in shipping costs and the conversion rate weren't so bad on the US side I'd bite. But knowing that the show is coming to Encore will likely keep me away from buying this "Down Under" release.

Gary "but maybe this is a good sign for a future R1 release" O.

After doing some quick checking on some Australian websites you can pre-order the complete 4th season for under US $50. However, the shipping rates are all over the place. One estimated $18 to ship and another

Sounds like a good plan, Brad. I'm of the same mind as you on this one. I'll wait for either an R1 and/or the Encore airings before I go the Australian route.

Gary "no offense to my Aussie friends intended, of course" O.

I looked it up on DevotedDVD, whom I've ordered from in the past, with good results. From them, it's $52 USD , with tracking and protective sleeves for the discs. It's from Madman Entertainment, who've done nice work with Ironside and other Universal releases (they're working on a release of It Takes a Thief, too). This sounds very promising! Did CBS do HD masters of this season?

Also, I wouldn't count on this a foretelling of a US release--Madman has picked up other dropped releases before (like McMillan and Wife).

That's a good question about the masters I guess it would be good to wait and see how the reviews come in to determine what they were able to use. Would CBS even let them use new HD transfers to work from? My guess would be not, but hey what do I know. If not then they would probably be similar to what Encore shows without the station bug.

Actually, I'm interested in the "It Takes a Thief" release as well and hope that happens. Right now I'm recording off of RTV which are cut with a somewhat annoying bug on the screen. I plan to just store them on my HD for now hoping an official release comes from somebody before deciding to watch them.

I got Season 4, and the picture quality is not as good as Seasons 2 & 3 from CBS, but good enough by my standards--closer to the appearance of most Universal shows I've seen on DVD. Based upon what I've watched, I'd spring for season 5.
Hopefully they will include the missing season 4 episode on this release.

Guy,

Thanks for the info! I keep being reminded how much I love my R-free player. We'll see if CBS/P resumes their releases but it's great news that there's another outlet choice for this show.

I think Encore Western is scheduled to air Rawhide at some point down the road as well.

The first season of Rawhide was released on DVD in the UK by Revelation Films/CBS DVD not long ago, but when it was passed by the BBFC one episode was missing and only 22 episodes are in the UK set. The episode missing is "Incident of the Roman Candles". The second season is being released early next year.

Richard,

There were only 22 episodes in S1 of Rawhide. Some online resources show "Incident of the Roman Candles" as airing 7/10/59, but it actually was the second episode of S2 (9/25/59). I imagine that this is just sloppy copying of Gianakos's error, many times over. I hope that the R4, S5 release of Rawhide will have the missing episode "Abilene" as well. Perhaps Grant from Madman can confirm that it will be included? I know that he mentioned in the Hitch thread that Madman are simply distributing these titles, but, he does have contact with the company in question.

I don't know about Gary's crystal ball, but in mine I see season 4 coming out around the middle of 2011!

There are no 'missing' episodes of Rawhide, 'Abilene' was certainly shown in the C4 UK reruns a few years back. It is an episode showing the end of a drive so perhaps was moved around when the series was syndicated.

I agree about the Gianakos books, generally useful but a lot of errors which could have been corrected with a little more diligent research. The most infamous being his summary of 'The Fugitive'.

I hope Neill's crystal balll is accurate, I will wait awhile before plumping for the Aussie releases.

What I would like to see included on a future set is the unaired 'pilot'. This has been floating around in collectors circles for some years. It is actually the 1st season episode 'Incident at Barker Springs' (the 12th actually broadcast). However the pilot has Robert Carricart as the camp cook & several other cast & scene differences. Would make a good 'extra '.

Wouldn't surprise me a bit to see Rawhide Season 4 come out in the summer of next year. But that's not my crystal ball talking, just me.

From what the crystal ball has told me, we were ever so close to seeing Season 4 picked back up last year but it just missed the cut at that time, so to speak. And with CBS/P apparently trying to blitz the market with their classics before the bottom falls out I'm feeling good about the chances of seeing Rawhide restarted in 2011.

Gary "this series is very, very high on my 'needs to be restarted and completed' list" O.

The Gianakos books did contain many errors. There weren't many series in which he didn't miss at least one episode entirely, sometimes even more, like with Bob Hope Chyrsler Theatre. But for their time, pre-internet, they were a godsend and certainly far and away the best reference source we had for episode guides and titles. As with The Fugitive summary, his glaring lack of knowledge about the shows themselves was quite obvious. While its a completely different kind of book, I still find Harry and Wally's Favorite TV Shows to be the best source for informed opinions on TV series. Although even they aren't perfect, giving a classic series like East Side West Side only 2 1/2 stars.
