There was a rather shortsighted article on IGN declaring 3D a gimmick after spending one afternoon playing 3D PS3 games at CES. They complained about the weight of the glasses and the fact that 3D was an unnecessary element in all of the games demoed. I will go along with them on the idea that 3D is going to be a tough sell if it requires a new television, since the 2000s were all about people upgrading to HDTV in large numbers. People consider their televisions to be an appliance--something to keep for years and years unless it breaks. Outside of that concern, home 3D is in its infancy and anyone who doesn't think there will be some killer app game or movie down the line hasn't paid attention to the history of entertainment technology, where there were always those saying, "sound is a gimmick," "color TV looks bad and will never catch on," etc.
