It's that time of decade again...

This is the place to post your top thirty films from the years 2000-2009

I will compile, periodically, a master list of HTF's top films of the decade and post the results to this thread through the first three or four months of 2010.

Since we’ve used a thirty films per year limit or higher in previous years, it would make sense that most of us have seen at least 300 films from 2000-2009 before posting a list. You’re welcome to append a list of every film you’ve seen from this decade’s new releases at the end of your post (if you’ve tracked such viewings), in fact, such a list may be very helpful to those trying to remember further back than last year (like me, ancient 26 year old that I am).

Please order your list and include thirty films. I will not tally a list with less than thirty films.

if your list is not ordered, all thirty films will be awarded an equal point value while tabulating the master list.

You have thirty film slots to fill. No ties. I will accept up to five Honorable mentions (unranked) that will receive ½ a point for each film, if you wish to avail yourself of the option.

Most of HTF, american and international members, use academy qualification (one week theatrical run in LA or NYC) to determine if a film is 2000-2009 or not, though you are free to use another qualification (first global release, which IMDB uses, is most common second choice), general release in your city is another common option.

If you update your list please make a post stating your list has changed, otherwise I won't change it in my excel sheet.

when compiling the master list, I'll award points based on ranking: for example, a number one film will receive 30 points, and a number 30 film will receive one point

Franchises have Different possible entries: I will count a vote for Fellowship of the Ring separately from a vote for Lord of the Rings. If you don't list what entry in a franchise a film is in, and just list a franchise title, I will tally that as a vote for the Franchise. A franchise must have a complete cycle in the decade in question. You need to vote for the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy, not the Star Wars Saga, and Indiana Jones is NOT a valid franchise vote, since only one entry was released in this decade. Don't refer to the Batman franchise, refer to either "The Nolan Batman" or "Batman Reboot" (if someone has something better to call them, I'm all ears).

If, unlike me, you have not been around HTF since 1999/2000, I strongly suggest you browse through the extensive best of year threads linked below, many fabulous films are mentioned and you will probably realize you’ve forgotten about some gem or another while scanning through the pages.

thanks! and have fun.

Studio of the Decade: Pixar consistently made spectacular films, filled with depth, emotion, excitement, and humor. This decade, they made Monsters, Inc, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars, Ratatouille, WALL*E, and Up. And their shorts were brilliant as well. Several of those films (a majority) will make my list. This is the easiest selection. No one else even came close.

Performance of the Decade: Daniel Day Lewis, Gangs of New York. An incredible performance in a movie that couldn't quite support it enough to make the film great. But DDL was mesmerizing, and I watch the movie now just to savor what he does (and how good Scorcese made it look).

Actor of the Decade: Kate Winslet. What needs to be said? So much more to look forward to.

Year: 2005. An incredibly diverse offering.

My list could probably only be based off of my memory and rethinking
of the movies. I have not rewatched most of these movies in the past
year. It's entirely possible, for example, that I would once again
prefer Batman Begins to The Dark Knight if I saw them back to back
now, as I did when I came out of the theater for TDK; but it's also
true that I have thought about TDK much more than BB, and it has
loomed much larger in my head now, so it pushes ahead.

1. Memento
2. The Lives of Others
3. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
4. Talk to Her
5. Yi Yi
6. Kill Bill, Volume 1
7. Capturing the Friedmans
8. Chop Shop
9. The Matrix Reloaded (Chuck, don't let me be the only one!)
10. The New World
11. Oldboy
12. The Incredibles
13. City of God
14. Hero
15. Punch Drunk Love
16. Billy Elliot
17. Goodbye Solo
18. Match Point
19. The 25th Hour
20. Collateral
21. Ratatouille
22. The Dark Knight
23. Almost Famous
24. Signs
25. The Prestige
26. Little Miss Sunshine
27. Capote
28. Twilight Samurai
29. LOTR: The Two Towers
30. Gangs of New York
Per Adam's allowance, my five honorable mentions:
Inglorious Basterds, Rachel Getting Married, Minority Report, High Fidelity, and In the Bedroom

Christopher Nolan comes out as the big winner on this list. Second place would be Ramin Bahrani, who tops both my 08 and 09 year end lists.

Honorable Mention:

31) A.I.: Artificial Intelligence

The contents of the list were pretty easy to choose because these 31 films are the only five-star films I've seen from the 2000-2009 crop. Ordering them was a real bear, though.

My memory puts Fantasia 2000 as a 1/1/2000 movie since that's how it was advertised. I know it had limited engagements in 1999, but it's much more of a 2000 film in my book.

This is going to be tough! I tried to stick with the films that have stuck in my mind the most and found it odd that much of this list flies in the face of my yearly top ten lists.

I'm sure that some tweaks are yet to come and I had to cut some tremendous films to pare this list down.

  1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
  2. There Will Be Blood
  3. Wall-E
  4. Pan's Labrynth
  5. City of God
  6. Lost in Translation
  7. Wonder Boys
  8. Ghost World
  9. Chicago
  10. Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring
  11. Children of Men
  12. Almost Famous
  13. Memento
  14. Good Night & Good Luck
  15. Zodiac
  16. In Bruges
  17. The Incredibles
  18. Gangs of New York
  19. O Brother Where Art Thou
  20. In Her Shoes
  21. Napoleon Dynamite
  22. A Serious Man
  23. Inglorious Basterds
  24. Batman Begins
  25. The Royal Tennenbaums
  26. Kill Bill: Part 1
  27. Sin City
  28. The Road
  29. Up in the Air
  30. Sideways
Since Documentaries are hard to mix-in, I'm going to give my 5 honorable mentions to my favorite documentaries of the decade!
  1. Grizzly Man
  2. Murderball
  3. Bowling for Columbine
  4. King of Kong
  5. Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price
