Here it is, the official thread for this years challenge!  Come one, come all and celebrate the 10th horrid year of this terrible challenge!  If you've never attempted the challenge, now is the time to dip your toes into the (acid) pool of celluloid atrocity known as the Scary Movie Challenge!

Here's the guideline that we've used past years, with a bonus 6th "rule" present for the birthday boy!

----------
1. Watch 13 Scary/Horror/Halloween-Themed films before midnight on October 31, 2008 (use your own timezone to set the ending time).

2. Two of the above must be new discoveries, movies you've never seen before. The point of this is to see those few movies you've always meant to see, but never got around to. I recommend more than 2, but 2 is the minimum to pat yourself on the head and say you completed the challenge. Please specify new discoveries in your film list by making them bold, adding asterisks, different colors, etc.

3. Come here and talk about 'em.

4. There is an uber-category, the Ultimate Splatter Challenge for those who wish to put all of the rest of us to shame. This is the heavyweight division. These people, if they choose to accept the challenge, must view 31 horror/scary/Halloween themed movies before dawn on Nov. 1st. Ten new discoveries are recommended for this one. The rest of us will bow down in awed reverence to these truly "Splatterific" HTF members. The bragging rights will be awesome and long lived.

5. There has been discussion over the past two years as to what movies qualify. Is Silence of the Lambs a horror movie? Does The Nightmare Before Christmas count? From now on, if you wanna include it, go for it. There will be no hairsplitting. If The Wizard of Oz send you to the dresser for a fresh pair of boxer shorts, all the power.  Running times are irrelevant.  Short films count.

6.  6.  TV Shows officially count, to a point.  They should be kept on a separate list to be tallied up at the end.  The tallying is based on the following:

Anthology shows count as single entities.  Each episode of "The Twilight Zone" is a self contained story, so each episode counts as one.  Same with "Masters Of Horror" and other anthologies.  These all basically replicate short films, if TV never came around, it would not be hard to imagine a "Twilight Zone" being a short subject before a film, and we've always counted those.

Episodic shows like "X-Files" and "Dark Shadows" now count, but not as single entities.  Typically on shows like this, a season is a storyline, which would not be fair to count as one.  So the compromise is this.  The average modern horror film is 90 minutes, so episodic shows are counted based on this mark.  So two episodes of a hour long TV show count as "One" title on the list, three 30 minute episodes of some other 30 minute horror based show ("The Munsters") would also count as "One" title on the list.

At the end of the challenge, the TV content will be added up, and then added to the final total.*

* This was added to end the debate that always seems to happen about whether TV should count or not.  I hope people still concentrate on theatrical films, so we'll see what happens. :)

Count me in. I've got nearly 600 horror films on various formats (and it's not even my favourite genre) about time I watched a few.

Do I get a badge or mask or something? Russ?

Classic production of Hawthorne's story by MGM has Lillian Gish in the role of Hester Prynne, the woman who has an affair with a priest (Lars Hanson) and must wear the sign of an adulturous while keeping the secret of who her lover was.  This story has been filmed countless times over the years but this silent version hasn't lost an ounce of its power in terms of the great acting, the greatness of the story and the all around production, which ranks as one of the very best for the studio.  There's not a single second in the film where you don't feel as if you're actually living during the time that this thing is set.  Everything from the sets to the costumes to the actual atmosphere just puts her right in place with the characters.  You can feel their thoughts, their pain and their ignorance in what happens to the Gish character.  There are countless great scenes in this film but the highlight has to be where the Gish and Hanson characters start to questioin love as they sit in a field.  To me this entire sequence is one of the most passionate ever filmed as the two actors do a masterful job at showing their love for one another yet they don't even touch.  The amount of passion in this scene will set the screen on fire.  As much passion as there is, there's also equal amounts of pain.  Gish's beautiful, sad eyes so perfectly fits the pain of the character that you can't help but fall in love with her and feel sorry for everything that happens.  I can't think of an actress out there who could get so much out of this character as Gish does and this here clearly ranks as one of her greatest performances.  Hanson is also extremely good in his scenes, although there are a few times where he goes a bit too over the top.  I think he does do a great job at displaying his anguish of the Gish character being punished while he gets away with the same crime.  Henry B. Walthall rounds out the cast as the bitter husband.  He too turns in marvelous work as he can make you fear him yet at the same time you can't blame him for his anger.  All three actors do terrific work together and really take the material and do wonders with it.  A lot of the credit must go to director Seastrom who keeps everything moving at a brisk pace and milks every inch out of the story.  His visual style is on full display through the wonderful cinematography and this is brought further to life by the terrific music score played with the film.  The first time I watched this movie was via a very dark and badly worn print but the latest, cleaned up print on TCM was a real revelation even though it still showed some damage.  Seeing the clearner print certainly made me appreciate this classic even more than ever.

Yeah, you hit the 13 to complete the challenge!  I only listed the "Ultimate Splatter-Heads" who did 31 or more, following previous examples.  That's the great prize you get that Steve was asking about I guess. :P
