Does your Marantz SR9600 playback a 7.1 pcm signal over HDMI? (1 Viewer)

I have a Marantz SR9600 and it doesn't seem to accept a 7.1 pcm signal over hdmi. I had the firmware upgraded to the latest version, and it did not seem to help. My SR 9600 is a U1B (version?) and does not have the Sirius Satelitte capability. I spoke to somebody at Marantz Technical Support and he mentioned that they had an upgrade about 1/2 way through production. I have not found out anything else.

If you have an SR9600 and a Blu-Ray player such as a Sony S550 which has internal HD audio decoding, you can send 7.1 pcm over hdmi to your receiver. I'd like to know if your receiver can accept this signal, and which version of the SR9600 you have. I briefly had an SR5002 and SR8001 and they were both able to accept and play back a 7.1 DTS-HD signal that was decoded and sent ala pcm signal over hdmi. The channels lit up on the front display and the rear surrounds play audio. With my SR9600, I don't recall getting all channels to light up, and while it says "7.1 pcm multi-channel" on the 5002 and 8001, it doesn't say this on the SR9600, and there is no audio in the rear surround speakers.

Just checking to see if anybody still has one of these and has tested it out. I am wondering if some accept 7.1 over HDMI and others do not. I have a feeling that if any 9600's playback 7.1 through the HDMI input, it could be the XM sat radio models.

The SR 9600 is hdmi vs. 1.1 so while it will accept 5.1 DVD-A it won't accept multi-ch SACD, TrueHD or DTS-MA. I'm pretty sure you need a 1.2 receiver for those like the 8001 and 5002 mentioned by the OP.

I am pretty sure too, and I am the OP...I was told by Marantz that there was a fix applied to the SR9600 part way through production which allowed the SR9600 to accept 7.1 pcm over HDMI.


I still believe it's possible that some SR 9600's, particularly the later production models with SAT radio can accept 7.1 pcm over HDMI. I'll just keep checking.
