Was wondering recently what Dennis Franz was doing.
Just checked.
He doesn't seem to be doing anything.
Not a single IMDB credit since NYPD Blue went off the air.

He had two very good runs, perhaps he is semi retired now.

Perhaps it was all that buttcasting he was doing while on NYPD Blue.

I wouldn't be surprised if he was doing a lot of stage work. The various IMDB equivalents for stage are far from complete.

Of course, he's also around retirement age. He may just be enjoying the free time.

Typecasting may be an issue; however, there may also be another side of the coin.

Based on various articles I've read, Franz really had a close relationship with Milch. Rather than try to develop a similar relationship with another writer/producer, Franz may be biding his time until he has another opportunity to collaborate with Milch.
