I'm piecing together an AV system for my home theater. I WAS going to buy an HP system from SAMs Club for around $1200 until I priced building one more powerful for less.

So far, this is what I've picked up:

Viotek 700W 20/24 Pin SATA and SLI connectors - $40 shipped - New V2 Viotek 700W 20/24 Pin High Quality Power Supply with Two PCI Express & SATA, 4+4pin for Server EPS+12v - New Revision for Advanced Cooling at 3B Tech - Buy computer parts, notebooks, desktops, & home electronics

GIGABYTE ATI Radeon HD4670 1GB DDR3 - $83 shipped - SuperBiiz.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Computer Accessories, Networking, Electronics, and more! This card has 2 DVI ports and an HDMI out - NICE!

Diamond XtremeSound XS71DDL - $57 shipped - Amazon.com: Used and New: Diamond XtremeSound 7.1/24 bit Sound Card with Dolby Digital Live ( XS71DDL ) This card is 7.1 and has fiber out - all digital straight to my Denon reciever - NICE too!

Sony BDUX10S SATA Blu-ray Disc-ROM Drive (Internal) - $87 shipped - Amazon.com: Sony BDUX10S SATA Blu-ray Disc-ROM Drive (Internal): Electronics

Vista Premium 64bit (yeah - I'll go win7 in October) - $75 - Newegg

I already have a server case.

Here's what I'm looking at to round out the system:

A combo deal: Core i7 920 with 4gb. Gygabyte GA-EX58-UD3R MB
Combo w/ Intel Core i7 920 (2.66GHz - Quad Core - 8MB Cache) - SMKSuperStore.com
With only the options I want - this will cost about $600 (the screen defaults to other options)

I'm still not sure what to do about a drive. I could get a 1tb drive for around $75 or go expensive and get a Raptor - I dunno...

It all adds up to a little over $1K. Not too bad for a fairly kick-butt system.

Sounds like a good plan. I would skip the raptor. If you really feel like you need the extra performance, go with two less expensive drives in a Raid-0 setup.
