Ivanhoe

TV Miniseries Based on the Classic Story by Sir Walter Scott
Debuts on DVD May 5

Culver City, CA (February 23, 2009) – Journey back to 12th century England when the CBS miniseries Ivanhoe debuts on DVD May 5 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The classic miniseries stars three-time Academy Award® nominee James Mason[1] (The Verdict, Georgy Girl)) and three-time Golden Globe® nominee Sam Neill[2] (TV’s “The Tudors,” TV’s “Crusoe”) and is based on the classic story by famous author and poet Sir Walter Scott. The complete series will be available for $14.94 SRP.

Sir Walter Scott was a prolific 19th century Scottish historical novelist and poet. He was one of the first English-language authors to have an international career, selling his books all over the world. Some of his most famous works include Rob Roy, The Lady of the Lake, Waverley, The Heart of Midlothian and The Bride of Lammermoor.

Set in 1194, Ivanhoe tells the epic tale of one young Saxon knight of 12th century England, Wilfred Ivanhoe. Upon his return from fighting in the Crusades alongside King Richard the Lionheart, Ivanhoe finds that the nation is now under the dictatorial thumb of the king's brother, Prince John and the prince's thuggish Norman cohorts. He is also dismayed to learn that his longtime love, Lady Rowena, has been betrothed to another man. Determined to restore throne and country to Richard, the courageous Ivanhoe soon runs afoul of those in power, though a few rebellious types like Robin Hood are on his side. Ivanhoe also finds love again, with the lovely Jewish girl Rebecca (Olivia Hussey), although she and her wise father Isaac of York (Mason) face Norman persecution for their religious faith.

For a quick second there, I thought this might have been the old Roger Moore series. No such luck.
