I had a little time on my hands, so I decided to make a list of films from the 1970's that have yet to be released on DVD in REGION 1. I decided to pick only one decade for easier manageability. I picked the 1970's because I feel it is the last great decade for American film and that there are many, many worthwhile films that have yet to be released on DVD. I also decided to make it English language only films, again for easier manageability, however this might change depending on the interest shown in this thread.
I'm hoping that there are some other members out there who also appreciate the films from this decade and would find this list useful. If not , then I will let this list die (but it will live on in my heart:)). I will update this list as soon as any of these films have been announced with a hard street date. I have also included some films that have been released on DVD but not in their proper OAR. I have listed these films with the word WIDESCREEN next to them.
I welcome any suggestions of films from the 1970's you would like to see on DVD that are not on this list (or not in their proper OAR on DVD). I, of course, will add them to the list.
Please let me know what you think of this list, good or bad, I welcome any feedback you may have. Also, If I made any mistakes, please let me know. (Also thanks to Jadzia, who inspired me).

I'd have to suggest three Bogdanovich movies:

Daisy Miller

Nickelodeon

At Long Last Love

Also Spielberg's Duel.

McCabe & Mrs. Miller still MIA.

It was supposed to be out this year but haven't hear anything recently.

Any list that includes Dirty Mary Crazy Larry and Dracula AD 1972 has got to be pretty damn comprehensive. Nice work, Jay! :emoji_thumbsup:

Great list!! I had to think long and hard to come up with something not on it: the immortal Roller Boogie
Seriously though, there are any number of "must have" movies on that list. Keep up the good work!

What are you considering the 70's? 1970 to 1979? Or 71 to 80?

For instance you have 'Tess' on there which is 1980.

Jay,

You didn't forget "McCabe and Mrs. Miller" from your list. And I must say, your list is pretty darn comprehensive!! I second "Shampoo" and widescreen releases of "The Sting" and "The Front Page".

There is one almost-forgotten '70's B-movie I'd like to add: 1976's "Drive-In". Anyone else remember this? It was a spoof of not only drive-in movies, but some of the disaster films that came out around that time via the movie showing on the drive-in's screen. Not a great flick, but still a lot of fun.

Would still love to have The Point on disc. Saw it two consecutive Christmas times on tv when it came out in 71.

Jay,
Here are some more suggestions:
Link Removed. A great WWII action movie with an all-star cast. Wonder who owns the rights to this movie.
Link Removed. One of the best Hammer productions. Paramount has the rights to this one according to Martin Blythe.
A man called sledge (James Garner).
Link Removed. Jean-Paul Belmondo starrer.
Link Removed . Jean-Paul Belmondo / Omar Sharif starrer.
Link Removed . 1969 movie but close to the 70's anyway.

Jay,
That is a GREAT list! You're a man after my own heart. I agree with you about the 70s being the last fully GREAT decade of American and British cinema, and your list is pretty inclusive.
In terms of some of the titles: DEMONS OF THE MIND SE is due from Anchor Bay next year, and VAMPIRE LOVERS SE is due from MGM in 2002 as well. Criterion is supposed to be working on EQUINOX and THE HONEYMOON KILLERS, but it's taking a while. Most of these titles are tied up with Warner, Columbia, Paramount and others. I think that the stuff owned by MGM will arrive the fastest, but it seems that the other studios are slowly dipping into their catalog titles, so you never know.
To see my site (which loves the 70s) check out Link Removed
PS: DRACULA A.D. 1972 RULES!

...you have THE EMPEROR OF THE NORTH listed...excellent;

MCABE AND MRS MILLER....good, good...

...and I would like to add a charming little foreign film from 1976, Carlos Saures'

CRIA! (Spain) w/ Geradine Chaplin

VIVA MARIA!

REPULSION...

ImDb lists TESS as 1979...

oh, and if we get to include 1980......POPEYE

Q: which studio has the MOST discs in this list...?

Richard Williams' 1977 kiddie matinee "Rageddy Ann and Andy"

Yes, it's cheesy, but it's 2.35:1 Panavision, weird, and has neat animation (and some nice songs)

I narrowed the ownership to eaither Paramount, Fox, or MGM.

Sorry, I should have made this clear. The list is 1970 to 1979. Tess was listed as 1979 at IMDB which is why it is in the list. If this is wrong, and it came out in 1980 then I will delete it. Does anyone know for sure?

The list is only for theatrical films (sorry again for not mentioning this). However, I will make an exception for Duel since it was released to theaters in Europe (I think).

Thanks again for your feedback.

"Fun With Dick And Jane" and "What's Up Doc" are by far my most wanted 70's films. Two others I would like that have not been mentioned are "Corvette Summer" and "Lipstick".

Bang The Drum Slowly - 1973
1900 - 1976
New York, New York - 1977
- Walter.
P.S. Terrific list of films, Jay. Good job!

I would add "Gray Lady Down" and "The Sting" to a category of films that have a DVD release but in P/S format only.

To the list of unreleased 70s films on DVD I would add:

Skyjacked

The Swarm (Bad movie but I need it for disaster film completeness)

Add to that list Philip D'Antoni's The Seven Ups, with Roy Scheider. Love that flick, needs a nice clean transfer in OAR.
