Jim Jannard announced this morning that Red has moved beyond the megapixel race for digital video and they have now begun to master the next realm of dynamic range.

 

Shooting 24fps at 1/48th they are now able to get between 18 and 21 stops of DR. Essentially they are now able to do real world HDR (ie not the crazy blown out HDR that photographers have been doing in software, see http://www.stuckincustoms.com for one example) in motion.

For reference, the top DSLRs these days (think Nikon D3x) have about 11 stops of dynamic range.

 

They had so much DR on their test chart that the chart was 'maxed' and they need to make a new test chart that can be used to accurately test what they can come up with.
