A gun barrel wavers across the screen. Judi Dench struts smartly across the white background from left to right. Suddenly she turns on one high-heel and whips a Walther PPK from under her blazer and snaps off a round at the camera. The gun barrel shakes, blood pours, and we are into the pre-title chase sequence of Quantum of Solace, the 22nd James Bond adventure. Dench speeds down a narrow winding mountain road, hot on the trail of an awol 007. Seems Bond is stirring up a rebellion against female authority in South America which threatens to spread all over the world, and she is going to put a stop to it even if it means turning him over her knee ...

Just kidding, of course. Be advised there are spoilers galore in these first reviews:

Reviews don't always stay up for long. If they are no longer accessible in a couple of weeks I will post excerpts from the ones I saved.

I admit I like the sound of some of these reviews. What some critics see as faults, sound more like virtues to me. But there are definitely some comments about the film that are disappointing to learn in these reviews.

Ajay Chowdhury, president of The International James Bond Fanclub and editor and publisher Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang Magazine, published what he calls a "spoiler free" review. It is the most detailed review thus far, but actually every word of it is a spoiler, so be warned:

Seen in a few of these reviews is the basic summary "Bourne without depth" Ugh.

Thanks for all the links Richard. I've read so many reviews I feel like I've seen the film already. Posted Image

Quote:
By the time the opening credits come along, playing out to Jack White and Alicia Keys's punchy title song, you realise you've barely breathed for five minutes.

Quote:
see it for Craig's fully-formed Bond: angry, icily unsentimental, and fleetingly borderline psychotic at the close.

Quote:
The deadpan humour is still there. And despite the occasional blasts of visceral and grisly violence, Craig is threatening to become the most popular 007 yet, certainly with the younger generation.

Quote:
As with The Dark Knight, the only real caveat is that while it’s exciting and imaginative, it’s not exactly anyone’s idea of fun.

Quote:
...set against this is the cool, cruel presence of Craig - his lips perpetually semi-pursed, as if savouring some new nastiness his opponents intend to dish out to him, and the nastiness he intends to dish out in return. This film, unlike the last, doesn't show him in his powder-blue swimming trunks (the least heterosexual image in 007 history), but it's a very physical performance. Quantum of Solace isn't as good as Casino Royale: the smart elegance of Craig's Bond debut has been toned down in favour of conventional action. But the man himself powers this movie; he carries the film: it's an indefinably difficult task for an actor. Craig measures up.

It's out on the 31st here, oh yeah, looking forward to seeing the first ever 007 'sequel'. Posted Image

I have a lot more reviews but probably I've posted more than enough already. I've been saving links but not reading them until after I see the film. I don't want to spoil it. A Bond film used to be full of surprises because nobody talked about it. Today they won't shut up. Practically everyone on the set gave interviews during the filming. The official website is full of them. Connery, Moore, Dalton never gave interviews; Craig loves to talk.

So does Marc Forster. It seems the film had an additional scene that was supposed to be the ending, but they decided to cut it. I don't know what the scene is about, only that it's not in the film but it will be on the DVD release in March 2009:

The other spoiler isn't really a spoiler at all since, having been reported all over the internet, it's common knowledge by now that M, as played by Judi Dench, will be replacing Bond in the gun barrel sequence from now on and taking a more active role in the action, in keeping with the producer's decision to expand her role as "mother" to 007 in the series.

Do let us know your impressions, but remember we don't get the film until November 14 in the states.

I can't resist reading reviews, and peeking under spoilers too, I'm weak. I can't remember the last time I saw a big new movie and didn't already know much of what was going to happen. Even trailers these days give away most of the plot.

Variety's Bond review has appeared - here's a spoiler free excerpt -

Quote:
The shortest and certainly the most action-dense Bond ever, "Quantum of Solace" plays like an extended footnote to "Casino Royale" rather than a fully realized stand-alone movie. Producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, possibly knowing they couldn't immediately top the previous pic's sheer stylishness, have radically reshuffled the series' traditional elements, but also allowed incoming helmer Marc Forster to almost throw the baby out with the bathwater. Played with a cold, mechanical efficiency that recalls the "Bourne" movies, with almost no downtime or emotional hooks, "Quantum" will find some solace in beefy initial returns but looks unlikely to find a royale spot in Bond history or fans' hearts.

Hmmm...

This is news to me. Is it actually true or are you joking? I know how you feel about these latter day Bond movies. If the above is true then QoS will be the last Bond movie I go to see. They have completely lost the program if Dench is going to be doing the gun barrel sequence and is going to be acting like Bond's Den mother.

The reviewer Derek Elley also compliments the Bond girls on their beauty and talent and then complains that their roles amount to no more than cameos. He confirms what I was afraid of:

Quote:
Variety:
However, the real female lead in "Quantum"
is Dench, whose M this time plays a much
fuller role, popping up in the most unlikely
places and engaging Bond in badinage.
Dench's style is always welcome, but the
sheer frequency of her appearances actually diminishes what should be a remote,
deus ex machina role.
Isn't that lovely?
Instead of Bond going on an adventure with beautiful women his own age, he shares the screen with a geriatric den mother.

They should have called the film

Stop! Or My M. Will Shoot!

Oh well.
It sounded so promising.

Some of the reviews have me a little disheartened. Certainly the movie will be fun and action packed, but when will producers learn that what makes a movie loved - what keeps the audience coming back - is a great story and strong characters?

With this installment, the filmmakers seem to have jettisoned good story telling for big action. And I suppose that's part of why audiences go to see Bond movies. But what set Casino Royale apart from the others was its character, story, and heart. I'm just afraid they'll see they can make about as much money without going that extra mile and we'll wind up in the same place we were in after Die Another Day.
"Here's looking at you, kid."

I honestly don't care about characters all that much in Bond films.

What worries me is how far they're scaling back the Bond girls ... I think that's a mistake if they're trying to make it too much of a Bourne-like series.

I thought the action was good in "Casino Royale", but it was a bit charmless & cold, this new one sounds even more so. I'm in no rush to see it.
