Last night while leaving my monthly fire meeting we were bombed by this little guy in our indoor fire escape. I warned the guys that if anyone touched him I'd hurt them =) Ran out and grabbed the Sig 150 and came back up and took about 50 shots. I still am learning macro technique and didnt have the D300 set up for off camera flash, but the diffuser really helped. The guy (I think he's a katydid but I originally called him a cricket and then a grasshopper) really was alert. He was watching me the whole time, and was really attracted to the flash bursts. He didnt seem frightened at all and gave me a bit of a show washing his antennae etc.

On the way back out to the truck I decided to give the 150 a workout as a quick portrait lens and was very impressed with it in that duty as well:

Not the best of expressions but 'Chet' was still a good sport about being photographed and has a lot of character in his face. He's quite the character himself =) I'm not a big fan of on camera flash but bounced and diffused it didn't ruin the mood too badly.

Sam,

Nice shots. Next time you may want to try some macro shots with the lens stopped down some for more depth of field to get the entire insect sharply in focus, too. I do like the shallow DoF effect, but sometimes having the entire subject in focus works well, too.

Definitely Scott, I usually run the aperture up and down quite a bit trying things out, but this little guy was a fast mover, didnt want to be flip flopping around and not let enough light in =)

Thanks! I went back out this morning and took a few shots with the Sig 150 but the beautiful light from yesterday couldn't be matched. Will see what they look like in Lightroom tonight.

It's one of those things you don't use every day but when you need it you NEED it, and when it works out right can bring a big goofy smile to your face if you like creepy-crawlies like I do!
