Stallone is or will be 62 this year. That's right. (so is my father. He doesn't kill people in Burma, but he is an avid tennis player. Meanwhile I can barely get from the couch to the beer in the fridge without being out of breath. WTF.)

Pretty great reviews are coming in. Can I say I'm really pumped for a new Rambo movie! Never seen one in the theatre so this will be my first.

Rotten Tomatoes is currently running at 32 percent. The good news, however, is that it's one of those movies where even the negative reviews unintentionally make it sound like a good time. I'm especially fond of this pull-quote from a rotten review: "It’s not a movie. It’s an adrenaline pump and purveyor of raw carnage." Works for me!

So, does this follow chronologically from 3, or do they pretend Rambo 3 never existed? I remember when Rambo 4 was going to take place in the middle of a city. Maybe still hope for that one next?

I realize that this sounds ridiculous but it's done as tastefully as something like that could be. It's in the movie to show the horrible things that actually happen over there but they don't wallow in it.

I did appreciate what Stallone was trying to do with the missionaries, I'm just not sure the actors (who played the missionaries) pulled it off all that convincingly.

Still, Stallone is definitely experiencing a renaissance in his career, and I've been quite impressed with his last two directorial efforts (Rocky Balboa and Rambo) where he has clearly tried to bring something different to the table rather than just rehash what we've already seen.

I agree with part of this but modern weapons are far more dangerous than we might expect and the film shows exactly what these weapons can do to a human body. I thought it was the opposite of cartoonish. Ridiculous? Not even close.

Disturbingly truthful, imho.

Oh, and I loved the flick.

My brother and I both saw Rambo this afternoon and we both loved it. My only complaint is...

The graphic killing of the children at the beginning made me very uncomfortable. Perhaps it's because I have a six month old little boy, but watching (or even thinking about) children being murdered makes me a bit nauseous.

I think the problem is that the graphic display of warfare is overused and over-the-top, and I became de-sensitived to all the carnage (otherwise, I'd probably be littering the aisle with puke), and it started looking like videogame footage or war-porn.

Fair enough. I was very uncomfortable during the many parts of the film and I guess that was the point. I would liken the carnage to that of the first 20 minutes of Saving Private Ryan. I think many will be confused that realistic battle footage abounds in a "Rambo" film, as if that's not possible. Rambo doesn't have to be a punchline.

I was in the mood to be spoiled tonight because I just had to know what other atrocities occur in this film and so I went to IMDB and began reading some truly disturbing things. :frowning:

I can't believe i'm going to say this about a Rambo film but I think i'll pass, some of the shit i've read here and at IMDB actually make me fear this movie. I mean there's a scene where a boy gets raped by the villain?

No way am I seeing that even if it is largly suggested. :frowning:

Yeah I know that those horrible things really do happen over there and Stallone wants us to see it in it's rawest form and I can appreciate that but I don't care, it's all too much for me.

I'm going back and forth about this myself. I had a friend who was actually going to be one of those missionaries to the Karen of Burma and had spent a couple summers on short term missions there. So it might be a little too realistic for my tastes too.
