I have a sound delay in HD on an older Kenwood and feel I need to upgrade into HDMI. It seems there is a consensus that both receivers are good options. I am on the fence and would like to make a purchase in the next week or so.
  • Should I consider another/different unit
This is in a smallish room and the unit will be in a cabinet so heat maybe a concern
Main viewing is for Directv HD DVR and 1080p TV, adding a HD DVD soon
Help and ideas are appreciated.

Both are nice receivers.

Go with Yamaha if you are running 7.1 as it will overlay PLIIx over 5.1 lossless and the Onkyo won't.

Onkyo is HDMI 1.3, Yamaha is not.

Onkyo will internally decode new lossless formats internally, Yamaha will not.

Owners of both rave about both.

Onkyo reportedly more "quirkier" and owners seem to have more complaints than w/ Yamaha.

About 12 years ago I switched from Onkyo to Yamaha and noticed that the FM tuner in the Yamaha receiver was much better than on the Onkyo I owned.

I've installed both units lately and the Onyko's IMO are easier to opperate and the menu's are more intiutive.
