Rumors have been flying for about a week and it's all but certain at this point.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) press release

Quote:
The new model features two USB 2.0 ports rather than four and no longer includes the multi memory card port.

The new model is no longer backwards compatible with PlayStation®2 titles, reflecting both the reduced emphasis placed on this feature amongst later purchasers of PS3, as well as the availability of a more extensive line-up of PS3 specific titles (a total of 65 titles across all genres by Christmas).

I think they are specifically targeting Blu-ray movie fence sitters with this model.

Rumor is the NA 40GB will get Spidey 3 pack-in.

That's not $399 US Dollars though. They want €399 which would be about $564 USD at todays exchange rate. I wonder how much it would actuallt cost if they release it here!

There are some leaked listings from retailers indicating the 40GB PS3 in the US will indeed be $399.99. The 80GB model will reportedly be $499.99.

Games consoles almost always are marked up in Europe vs. the US.

As I've predicted ... there probably is not going to be a clear cut winner in this format war.

Pete, if that is true about the 80gig dropping to $499, I am going to be mighty pissed off: I just picked up a 60gig last week.

I would try and return it if possible.

The 40G will be released in the US also on October 28th. I read that the 60G will have a price drop, but the 80G was not mentioned; it would seem logical that the 80G will also have a price drop for the holidays. An announcement is rumored for the 12th.

20gb is $499 and discontinued... no wireless, full PS2 support
60gb is $499(was $599) and discontinued.. full PS2 support
80gb is $599 and comes with 2 controllers and 1 game... Limited PS2 support...
40gb is $399 and has wireless, only 2usb, no PS2 support...

Without the extra controller and game, the 80gb model will be dropped to $499.
