Dear Steve Jobs and Apple,

When I first started seeing the stories of iPhone users being hit with thousands of dollars for international data charges by AT&T, I thought it was a bunch of idiots who spent their vacation watching YouTube videos over EDGE. But after the mother of a close friend got hit with a $1300 bill, and today's Slashdot story of a $4800 bill for three phones, one thing is clear:

Apple needs to immediately release an iPhone update, which allows users to disable EDGE while keeping Voice and WiFi on. This would solve travelers' problems, by allowing them to still use their phones for voice, and get their e-mail at WiFi Hotspots without fear of ruinous data charges on their next bill.

Sincerely,
Ted Todorov

Well, it looks like Apple listened. If the screenshots of iPhone firmware 1.1.1 posted on macrumors.com are to be believed, there is now an option to turn off Edge roaming.

1.1.1 is now out, and it definitely includes the EDGE roaming off option. I haven't tried it myself, will load it tonight at home.
