I'm SERIOUSLY considering the BD-UP5000. Hopefully it can be found online for around $700-$800.

Are these Samsung players certified by the HD-DVD group and therefore use the HD-DVD logo (which was not the case with the previous LG player).

Nothing yet. It wasn't in their press release, so I am going to assume no. The show floor opens tomorrow, so I will be able to get an answer in the next day or two.

The new Samsung combo fully meets the HD DVD spec (ethernet, HDi, etc).

Are these units are still decoding HD audio internally or can they pass the full bitstream out to a compatible receiver?

Since they are HDMI 1.3 if they can't now, I am assuming at some point in the future they will be able to. In talking to receiver and HD player vendors as well as Dolby reps, it seems like this ability is overrated. Every single person I have spoken with has said it doesn't matter if the player decodes or the receiver decodes the bitstream.

That's definitely good to know. I've been looking at upgrading my receiver recently and have been wondering how much benefit there is to external decoding.

Well if I understand correctly on board decoding on player is terrific! If the player does all the decoding I don't need the latest receiver as long as it can receive the decoded signal. so either 5.1/7.1 inputs or capable or receiving multiple PCM tracks through HDMI (only newer models but a few out there already). Therefore no need to wait for latest receiver to enjoy HD audio. Better yet when they are out we can get a good deal on those "older" receivers that cannot decode these new fancy HD audio signals but who cares as long as they can take the already decoded signal from the player

Has anyone heard any more on this player?

I have been meaning to finish off the picture area. I will try to get that done in the next day or two. I have pics of this, the Pioneer, and the Sharp to post. The Sony pics are already posted.

Yep, I don't know much more now than I did before CEDIA except the price is lower.

The specs say a lot. It has FULL support for HD DVD including secondary video decoder and ethernet. No one at Samsung (or LG for that matter) could tell me with 100% certainty that BD would als be able to take advantage of this. They all "think so" but until there are actual production BD discs that support/require ethernet or a secondary video processor that can be used to test with they can't be sure. Classify this as rumor for now, but I did hear that Warner provided some BD test discs with secondary video (not sure about ethernet) for testing in Korea a few weeks ago, and no BD player was able to handle this feature. That might be able to be fixed through firmware, but I think it's telling that neither combo player is marketed as a BD 1.1 player. At least you can use the ethernet port for firmware updates.

What "additional info" are you guys looking for?

As a side note, it looks like based on what I saw at CEDIA, there are two was to meet the 1.1 profile. Built in or outboard memory. All current BD profile 1 players are required to have 64kb of onboard memory. 1.1 profile players are supposed to have 256mb of memory. Until CEDIA I assumed it was onboard as well, but it doesn't have to be. The Denon 1.1 player (the only one announced for production so far) DOES NOT have 256mb of built in memory. It relies on the SD slot on the front panel to get it's 256mb of memory. I also don't believe that it comes with the 256mb SD card. I am trying to find out if this makes it upgradable to 1.1 and it only officially becomes 1.1 after you buy and insert at least 256mb of memory, or that just having an expandable memory slot makes it 1.1 compliant. The Denon does have the secondary video decoder also required in 1.1

Please note that all HD DVD players have 256mb of memory and all have USB ports to allow this to be expanded when needed.
