Has it been said that the Gamecube will be able to do 16/9???
I already like the 480p feature and 16/9 will just be icing on the cake.

Anybody??? I checked the Nintendo website and it didn't mention anything about 16/9. It did say that the GC will have a digital A/V output which I assume is for 480p playback.
Thanks

Technically, 16:9 is more of a feature of the game, and not the system. The NES could output a 16:9 signal if the game was formated for that aspect ratio.

Why would you want a 16:9 game? Video games are meant to be in 4:3. There are few formats that would look as good in 16:9 as they would in 4:3. Maybe a racing game...that's about all I can think of. The way we play sports games they would suffer because they are up and down, not left and right.

Video games are meant to be in 4:3.
(Puts on old-timer's hat) You ask me, they're meant to be 3:4. Back when I first started playing games, most of the TVs in arcade cabinets were vertically oriented; you really noticed it when you popped in the home versions of Pac-Man or Donkey Kong and the playfield was all distorted.
Besides, movies were originally approximately 4:3. Didn't stay that way. Then TV shows were 4:3, and that stayed stable for a long time, but many HDTVs are 16:9 and there are several shows broadcast in widescreen even on NTSC now.
So, clearly, it's up to the developer (in any medium) to make sure the chosen aspect ratio is used well. A blanket statement that an entire medium is best suited to one shape is, well, a silly blanket statement.

Matty B,
You've obviously not played Madden 2002 in widescreen have you? A lot of games can indeed benefit from a widescreen option. Having a widescreen tv and having to either zoom in or stretch the picture is not very enjoyable. However, simply encoding the game to "open" the field up a bit to take advantage of the extra screen space is very welcome indeed, and for the most part, adds to the enjoyment.

gran turismo 3 on Ps2 has a nice 16x9 mode as well- when playing 2 player, instead of getting a vertical split screen, it puts them side by side, with time and info in a black letterbox. very cool.

And I loved playing both that way..even on my 4:3 TV!
Goldeneye still rocks...
I hope that more games will have WS and/or 16:9 modes.
Have to plan for the future, right?

How do you turn on Madden 2002's wide screen mode? I have turned on NCAA 2002s and was NOT impressed.

Actually I was hoping for Madden to offer this because it really sucks that you can't see what your receiver is doing before throwing the ball to him. The wider screen would really help that.
All this good stuff actually is making me want to buy one. Is Madden 2002 going to allow for an expansion draft with the Texans??? I heard that in the PC version you could only switch a team out, not gain an extra team(making 32).

Im only speaking from my experience with the PS2 version (Of which Im still waiting to hear how you turn on the wide screen mode [I dont think it exists]) The Houston Texans get added after the first year of your franchise, and are an addition which drafts an expansion draft. You also have the option of adding a fantasy team which you have created, instead of the Texans. I don't know if Dom Capers is added as the coach of the Texans, I am guessing yes.

Matty, go to the "options" section and look under "camera". There you can select from Madden, Classic, Widescreen, etc.

That isnt a widescreen mode. NCAA 2002 actually has an output for 16:9 televisions.

So does Madden. I don't have it fired up right now to tell you where it is, but it's there. Under the display options from the main menu would be my guess, tho.

No offense intended to roblutter, P.Seymour Hoffman is one of my favorite actors.

Umm..
Every single genre can benefit from 16:9. Platformers, RPGs, racing. Look at Rayman, SSX, GT3, and GTA3, for instance. Playing these games in 16:9 does not detract from the experience. If the game designer feels that altering the ratio will not compromise the aesthetic goal of the game, then where is the problem exactly?
Games are not *meant* to be in 4:3, that is just what we've all been used to until recently.
IMO, of course. :)

I completely disagree. This is just people with widescreen TVs having MAJOR sour grapes. Video games are meant to be viewed in a 4:3 ratio, there is no way to make a twitch game work in a 16:9 format.

So when game designers start focusing on widescreen (as they're sure to do), the games just won't work?
What about 3:4 ratio games? What about the already existing "jumbo screen" arcade games that used multiple monitors to give the illusion of widescreen gaming before widescreen monitors were feasible costwise?
What's your reasoning behind your blanket statement?
