I recall hearing a rumor a long time ago that witht he PS3 you would be able to rip games to the HD and thereby save load times on frequently played games, is this true? has anyone done it and can you tell me how to do it if you have.

That's a misconception. You're not actually "ripping" games onto the hard drive. Specific game titles will let you install a large cache of files and other information that will improve data streaming and allow for faster load times. This particular features is supported on a title by title basis. Virtua Fighter 5 for instace allows you to install almost 2gigs of data to the HDD to speed up load times. Oblivion will allow you to install almost 5gigs of information which will help to speed up load times significantly. Ridge Racer 7 is another game that allows you to take advantage of this function. These games will usually prompt you right off the bat as to whether you want to install the data to your hard drive or not.
