5 years later and hdtv tv's are still messed up! (1 Viewer)

I bought a mitsubishi 55809 a long time ago, just a monitor, still runs good after fixing the board. I haven't looked for a new one until yesterday, thought a lcd would be nice for the bedroom. Man, can't even find a small one with 720p display. What the heck is 1366x768?? At least they started including atsc tuners in some models. I just think it's more confusing now then ever! Now there's this whole 1080i/1080p deal going on, people are buying lcd's that don't have hdtv native resolutions, etc. I think I'll go hide in my basement for another 5 years and see if it all shakes out!

Westinghouse makes some excellent HDTVs. I personally have a Westinghouse model LTV-32w6 HD which cost about $900. It's a 32" flat panel with built-in ATSC tuner and displays 480i, 480P, 720P and 1080i. I have it mounted on the wall in the master bedroom. A very good set for a good price. Read my review here.

The 1368 x 768's (768p's) work just as well as 720p's.

The typical CRT HDTV of years ago handled 1080i quite nicely although not perfectly because the electron beam was a bit too fat. The typical CRT HDTV of years ago would not accept 720p so your set top box tuner had to do the 720p to 1080i conversion.

All non-CRT 1080's are 1080p's as opposed to 1080i's. Unfortunately 1080i shows usually don't come out any better on today's 1080's or 720p's compared with yesteryear's 1080i's. Better technology for converting 1080i to 720p or 1080i to 1080p is not affordable enough yet.

So long as you have native input with HDCP (1080p on a 1080p set and also 720p on a 768p set) you will be OK. You don't have to upgrade the 1080i to 1080p processing now. But if you do become dissatisfied, you won't be able to upgrade a 1080i only input later without buying a completely new TV.
