The Disclaimer
Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed Sunday advertisements. All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price.

"LP" in the RoundUp table means a store’s Sunday flyer says "Low Price". That means I could not locate a definite price for the item, and the ad is all I have to go on. Retailers use these phrases in advertisements so that they do not violate MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) agreements with the studios. Doing so can cost them thousands or even millions of dollars in co-op advertising funds.

I, obviously, cannot include EVERY title released in a given week in the RoundUp. The titles included are those that I am interested in...as well as those which I consider will be of interest to a majority of consumers (and sometimes I’ll miss one!). I don't get paid for this, and I don't have the time to list every DVD. So, please don't complain! If there is a title not included in the RoundUp that you want to see, just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone!

Note that I cannot include Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club prices in the RoundUp. They set prices at individual stores based on nearby competition, so there is no way I can say here what price you'll find at YOUR local Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club location. And, as always, Circuit City does not guarantee their sale prices in Hawaii.

I feel like Bill Murray in "Groundhog Day"...every week I look at the Round-Up to plan what I am going to buy on Tuesday and EVERY week there is STILL nothing to buy! Over and over and over.... (Is a new Perry Mason set coming anytime soon? THAT will get me outta this rut!)

That is appropriate, Eric. Groundhog Day is right around the corner. It's one of those few days each year where I take out one of my favorite films to commemorate the day! Posted Image

Thanks as usual.

What a disappointing week! I keep track of what's supposed to be coming up that I want, and something must have happened, cause this week was supposed to include new versions of The Burbs, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, The Money Pit and the Jerk, which appear not to have materialized. Posted Image

I hadn't see any of those on a release list. Maybe they are just price reductions? Or maybe two-packs (one Tom Hanks and one Steve Martin)?

I don't keep track of where I find the info, I just enter it into a list if I'm interested. However, just backtracking a little, I think I got this from The Digital Bits (usually reliable - it wasn't a rumor mill, it was an official announcement) from Nov. 2 of last year:

On the standard DVD front today, Universal has announced the release of a Steve Martin: The Wild and Crazy Comedy Collection on 1/23 (SRP $19.98), which will include newly-remastered versions of The Jerk, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid and The Lonely Guy. Also coming that day is a Tom Hanks: Comedy Favorites Collection (SRP also $19.98), including remastered versions of The Money Pit, The 'Burbs and Dragnet.

I assume this was true, that Universal did make that announcement, yet something happened and it got cancelled or postponed.

Edit: Checking Amazon, it appears to now be coming on Feb. 13. Of course whether they will actually be new & improved versions remains to be seen.

Another quiet week for me -- and I'm grateful! I bought so many DVDs in November and December, my credit card needs a good long holiday! It'll be back to work soon enough, I'm sure.

It does seem like we're in a long period with very little of interest. Only must-buy for me on standard DVD this week is the Kurosawa set from Criterion. I'll also pick up the 2 HD-DVD releases.

Three truths about movies, as noted by Roger Ebert:

* It's not what a movie is about, it's how it is about it.

* No good movie is too long, and no bad movie is short enough.

* No good movie is depressing, all bad movies are depressing.

I picked up Cars last night because it was the last night of the "buy Taxcut state/federal and get a $20 DVD free" at Best Buy for $30 total. I figure I was going to buy the Taxcut software, why not get a DVD out of it. Other than some HD DVDs, I also haven't found much to buy at the time, but I am grateful for the "break", my credit cards could use the break as well.

I just got into an argument at Best Buy over GoodFellas. The picture in the ad is the 2-disc Special Edition. When I got to the store, it was only the one disc from 1999. They told me it was a misprint in the paper and there is nothing they can do about it. Surprisingly, no 2-discers were anywhere to be found..I'll bet they will next week. This is bull. I wish I could report this to someone.

Scott, you could try price matching it at another store or go back to BB on another day and see if you can get a raincheck on the two discer. Posted Image
