HI,
Watched this last night.
Being a big fan of the Need for Speed series of video games for x-box, I found that I really enjoyed the racing sequences in this film. Drifting is a very different style of racing and this film did an excellent job of recreating the look and feel of drift racing. This film IMHO pays wonderful homage to NFS Underground 2 and many of the sequences in the film and many of the cars looked exactly like those found in the game. Really quite cool actually.
The story is a bit thin and the lead characters are rather cartoonish but who gets this type of movie for the plot? I wanted it for the racing and the cars!
The picture quality was incredible, the scenes with the cars literally jumped off the screen with all the vibrant colors. I occasionally thought that whites seemed a little blown out but it could be that I have the brightness on my TV to high (although it seemed correct using AVIA). Occasionally, I noticed that flesh tones seemed just a bit off and a bit washed out. I did not see this film theaterically so I do not have anything to compare it to but it did seem to me to be rather harshly lit during some scenes. Agains this could be a function of my TV so your impression might be different from mine.
I noticed no pixelixation, no edge enhancement whatsoever. The picture was crystal clear, so much so that I commented to a friend that you could see the fibers on clothing.
The sound quality of this film blew me away. The DD+ soundtrack processed using the HD a1 using the 5.1 analog outs was amazing. The bass was so tight, the directional pans very accurate, and the engine noise outrageous. The switches from inside the car to outside were very impressive, accurately portraying the sound experienced from both inside and outside of the vehicle. Vocals were always clear and intelligible. The soundtrack that accompanies the film is very bass heavy hip hop type music and the bass extension was very impression. My friend commented that he loved Bob Carver (I have a sunfire sub) and couldn't beleive the bass response we were getting in the room. A nice compliment!
I did not have a chance to check out any of the special features but the disk is loaded with them. Maybe someone else can comment.
All in all, this was a worthy HD DVD purchase. Then again, every HD DVD I have purchased has been of exceptional quality. More titles like this one, at least in terms of picture and sound quality, will make HD DVD hard to beat.
