Wow, he's made more movies than I thought he had... I have some catching up to do...

My favorite so far is Hamlet, which I adore, even if it's a little over the top. I much prefer his version of Henry V to Olivier's pompous, propagandized film version, which I found rather tasteless. And Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is vastly underrated -- closer to the novel than people claim, if too indulgent and sloppy to be called a masterpiece. It entertains me, and there is more than enough emotion in it to satisfy me. Much Ado About Nothing always brightens my mood. I can't think of a sunnier, more pleasant movie than that.

Where is Hamlet on DVD? There's been a spot on my shelf reserved for that film since 1999! :frowning:

In order of merit:
1.Henry V (1989) ***1/2
2.Hamlet (1996) *** {Short Version}
3.Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994) **1/2
4.Sleuth (2007) **
Most of Branagh's films - particularly those I've watched - would seem to imply that, as a film-maker, he is merely a man of the theatre bringing classic pieces to life on the silver screen. His considerable talents are more far-reaching than that; however, good and occasionally brilliant as they might be, his versions do not in any way impinge on the indelible memories of the vintage classic originals and his Frankenstein and Sleuth movies are particularly lamentable.
