Beebe's name has been used more than any other cinematographer in reviews this year and once you see the terrific Miami Vice, you will understand - I have never ever loved the visual look of a film more than Vice

Can someone explain - or provide a link - on how this type of photography produces such a unique look? As a complete novice, to me (a) nighttime scenes aren't necessarily clear but there is a lot of detail, especially on the periphery and (b) in daylight, the images are incredibly gorgeous. I am a bit surprised I haven't seen more usage of this style but it is such a specialized look that I am thinking one could only use high-def on action films.
