Can you convince me to sell my PS2 and get an X-Box? (1 Viewer)

Hey folks!
My wife would pretty much kill me if I went out and bought another console just a year after purchasing the PS2... So.... I am considering the prospect of auctioning off my PS2, games and accessories on ebay, and buying the X-Box, some games, and accessories... My question... Is it worth it? Is the "HDTV compatibility" of the X-Box really going to be used in a way I will notice on my Toshiba 50H81?
I'm a big football gaming fan, so those are the most likely games for me to buy...
Anyhow, here are my thoughts on what I would be auctioning versus what I would be buying if I get an X-Box...
E-bay off the following:
Playstation 2
2 controllers
Interact Pro series component video cable
Interact s-video/audio cable
Madden 2002 PS2
Madden 2001 PS2
GT3
Star Wars Starfighter
Smuggler's Run
8 MB memory card
Sharkport
Pick up:
X-Box
extra controller
HDTV kit
remote
NFL Fever 2002
Madden 2002
maybe NFL2k2
Does it seem like I might come out close to even? Or even within $50?
Can you persuade me or disuade me from this course of action?
Thanks!

Well, I can't speak about football games, not being a big fan (although some of those new ones do look sweet), but I wouldn't recommend getting rid of your PS2 right now. There are so many great games for it that have just come out and are just coming out, that I wouldn't want to be without one right now.

I'm with Dean. No way should you get rid of the PS2.

How about we try to convince you not to seel your PS2? That would be a bad decision, especially now.

Well, convincing me not to sell my PS2 is certainly an option...
I have to admit... a large part of me would prefer the X-Box didn't do well, because we don't need Microsoft to monopolize another market... but as the launch day approaches, I am becoming more and more impressed with the features of the X-Box...especially where my widescreen TV/sound system are concerned. I am also intrigued by the fact that the X-Box comes with the ethernet capability and a hard drive...
I guess what I'm looking for is for someone to tell me that the X-Box is not worth getting... Or for someone to tell me it is definitely worth it...

And...
As far as football games go... This year... The X-Box offers at least as much as the PS2.
X-Box: NFL Fever 2002, Madden NFL 2002, NFL2K2
PS2: Madden NFL 2002, NFL2K2, & 2-3 more titles not worth mentioning...
I have Madden 2002 on my PS2, and it is the best football game so far. As a matter of fact, the reason I bought my PS2 in the first place was for Madden 2001 PS2. But, Madden 2002 will have a few more features on the X-Box than the PS2...not to mention shorter load times. NFL Fever 2002 is looking to be a decent football game... I am planning to pick up NFL2K2 for the PS2 if I decide to keep it, because it looks as though it may compete nicely with Madden...
So, yes, when it comes down to it, it's all about the football games. Of course, if I jump ship from the PS2 to the X-Box in a week or two, and then it tanks... I'll enjoy the football games this year, but will they be back next year?
Ugh.... choices... :)

If you had a 480i set, I'd say definitely keep the PS2. Since you can do 480p, I'd say consider switching to the XBox if you can only do one. But that is a personal decision, don't let anybody tell you what is the right thing to do, because they may not have your taste.
Anybody who wants to learn to see interlace artifacts in games should just play Jet Grind for a few minutes in 480i, then switch to 480p. Look at the difference in the panning. The problem is, once you learn to see it there, you'll see it everywhere, and it can compromise gameplay by making it harder to tell the exact placement of different objects or characters when panning. Which can affect sniping, passing, etc.
As far as the XBox tanking, all indicators are that Microsoft is ready to lose a BILLION dollars on it over the next 3 years. Unlike Sega, they can afford this. The XBox isn't going to disappear, whether it comes in second place or third over the next year. If it comes down to it, if sales are mediocre there are things they can do to incent certain developers like EA to stick around...

A)Can someone tell me how to make it so I dont have to type in my user name and password every time?
B)None of those games you mentioned support HD, or even progessive out. Im waiting on the Xbox and seeing where it is 6 months after release. I jumped on the dreamcast bandwagon WAY too early. Im going to buy a cube for x-mas and see where the chips fall. The Gamecube also does HD/Progessive out, and it's $199...

Source, please.
I know Fever does progressive. I've checked it out.
I'll wager every XBox game does at least 480p.

Back to topic, stick with your PS2. As far as football games are concerned, the PS2 already has some, plus some new ones. Madden 2001 was great, so why not pick it up cheap?
As far as every other genre goes (besides FPS) the PS2 matches or excels above the XB, and the GCN. Simply because of the one year lead, yes, but it still wins out.

Who left topic? He asked about PS2, XBox, football, and progressive graphics? That's what the rest of us are talking about. We were all on-topic. And you are replying with statements that show that you haven't even read everything that he has said.
He sure didn't ask about GameCube.

Andrew,
I sold my PS2 partly in anticipation of the Xbox and partly to pay wedding expenses. I'm still debating whether I should rebuy the PS2 or an Xbox. I'm leaning toward the Xbox. The Madden 2002 in widescreen should be really cool and I hope NHL 2002 does the same thing. Real time Dolby Digital. The hard drive. The graphic improvements. The only drawback is the uncertainty with 3 gaming platforms on the market right now.

Most consoles really don't take off that well until they are a year old. Thats when the second gen games start to come out and they have a hugh line up. Look at PS2 I was bored to death with mine until this summer when Twisted Metal Black came out then we had GT3 and now there are so many new games to play that it is really hard to choose. If you can wait until summer or even a year from now before you get an X-Box and see how it is. I wouldn't sell my PS2 right now. Next year though it will probly go.

Andrew,
From what I know about techno-nuts (I am one), if you already comparing systems on technical merit and how they would integrate into your home theater, I think the decision may be easier than you think:
You enjoy taking advantage of you home theater (and who doesn't). We like to feel we're getting the full benefit out of our investment (I know I do). Out of the box, the XBox should integrate nicely into a home theater setup with no compromises (unless you call no coax digital audio a compromise.
wink.gif
) A perfect fit for you progressive display and your DD receiver (assuming you have DD, or course).
You enjoy football: If you went with an XBox, you will not be making compromises here as the big title footballers are getting great reviews. Your PS2 footballers have equal, if not superior (at whatever length), performers on the XBox. No compromise there.
The only con I would see is not getting to take advantage of PS2's ever impressive library. But, again, you've made it clear your concern is football - and there, at the very least, you'll be satisfied. Everything else is gravy.
NFL Fever in 480p! Madden in 480p! NFL 2K2 in 480p! Football games in realtime Dolby Digital 5.1!
At least think about it Andrew. :)

Get both. Hell, I'm married and I have a DC, N64, PS2, and an XBox on the way. It's all a question of priorities. $300 is a lot of money, but you can't tell me you didn't see this coming 6 months ago. Keep the PS2, put aside a little money now and then, and get an XBox in March. I like BOTH, and would NEVER trade one for the other.

If your asking this question the answer is very simple, do it! Seriously, now is the best time to sell that PS2 of yours, you can get top dollar for it on ebay still and if you regret your decision ( which I HIGHLY doubt ) you can always buy another PS2 a few months down the road for much less. Once the other systems have started to sell, the demand for a used PS2 is going to go down the shitter BIGTIME. So I bet in 4 months or so that PS2 you have will be worth half as much as it is now.
I just went through the same thing today and you know what? I sold mine for a GCN, that's right! I'm getting both at launch now. The reason, is because I got almost retail for my PS2. I won't be missing it soon and even if I do down the road, I'll just pick up a used one cheap later on.
Just for the record, NFL Fever totally SACKS Madden. Go for the Xbox man.
