[* denotes double-dipping]

Some of these titles I've been eager to catch up with for ages - the Mauritz Stillers, the Jacques Feyders, some of the Karloffs, WARNING SHADOWS (1923), THE MALTESE FALCON (1931), LET'S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH (1971), etc. - and some are relatively obscure even for me - THE BLACK PIT OF DR. M (1958), JIGOKU (1960), HUNGER (1966) and RED ANGEL (1966). PLAYTIME (1967), then, is something of an anomaly: a film of enormous reputation which I was very disappointed by but, despite its not being the (apparently lost) full-length version, I'm prepared to give it another chance by virtue of Criterion's supplement-stacked reissue.

I'm most looking forward to:

1. The Little Mermaid Platinum Edition - I've owned the "Limited Issue" non-anamorphic bare bones version since January 2000. I'm more than ready to "double dip" on this title.

2. The African Queen - I know you said "Official" but we're still hearing that it may "sneak out" in the fourth quarter of this year. I sincerely hope so since, as far as I know, it's the *only* AFI Top 100 movie still not available on R1 DVD.

3. Star Wars Trilogy Theatrical Releases - Yeah, I know: These will be non-anamorphic and sourced from the same 1993 DVNR-filtered D1 tapes that were used for the '93 and '95 LD's. But I've never owned a LD player so I've got to have these. I'll just curse Lucas under my breath every time I play 'em!

4. Superman Mega-Box; Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest; Cars, Over the Hedge, Monster House, and all the other great Summer hits.

5. The James Bond Lowry-restored re-issues.

Although not officially announced, the Forbidden Planet SE has been rumored for release the last three years; hopefully this will be the year we'll *finally* get it!

I second this thought, though I doubt we will see it this year (perhaps '07). BTW, The Jazz Singer (1927) is the only other title not yet released in R1 from the AFI top 100 list.

I'm also hopeful for Reds and am wishing to see a rerelease of The Last Emperor (an abomination of a first release on this classic)...

My wishlist is fast dwindling. Though fast approaching 2000 titles I no longer have much of a wishlist left. This must surely be the tail end of the DVD craze, started in '97. It looks to have a 10 year run. I don't see much of a rush to jump on the HD bandwagon. That incremental format change seems to have been both highly overhyped and riddled with poor launch campaigns and buggy hardware woes.

Speak for yourself because I'm love what I've seen and heard with my HD players and this is coming from somebody with 3300 dvds.

Announced titles I'm most looking forward to:
1. Naked Spur - I've been waiting years for this. My favorite of the Mann/Stewart Westerns
2. The Black Swan - The best non-Flynn classic Technicolor Pirate flick. Posted Image
3. Seven Samurai (redo) - An all time Top 10 of mine. Somewhat worried about the subtitle/translation controversy.
4. The Maltese Falcon (3-disc SE)
5. WB Legends of Horror Collection - All the films are great fun (well except for Return of Dr X which is kind of a stinker).
6. Double Indemnity (Legacy Collection) - Waiting years for a decent version.
7. Godzilla '54 and the 6-disc Box (un-cut OSL) - though I only really want 3 of the 6 films in the box.
8. Border Incident - the only film in the new Warner Noir set that I'd like to own.
9. Each Dawn I Die - Though I might opt for the entire Tough Guys Collection. dunno yet.
10. ?

The Jury is still out:
Apocalypse Now (complete dossier) - If this was the theatrical OAR I'd be jumping for joy. As it stands I'll be waiting for reviews to see if it's worth an upgrade.
A Fish called Wanda (SE) - The recent poor track record of MGM SE re-releases is going to make me wait and see on this one.
Superman (14-disc collection) - The first film and the Donner cut of II are must haves but I hated III and have no desire to see IV. I guess the deciding factor will be how much I like S Returns and what the bonus discs consist of.

Still waiting for an official announcement:
Blade Runner TUOE (tide us over edition) - If coming in Sept, an announcement should be here any day. right? Posted Image
2001, A Space Odyssey (2-disc SE) - ditto
A Clockwork Orange (2-disc SE) - ditto
The Shining (2-disc SE) - ditto
Forbidden Planet (2-disc SE)
Duck You Sucker - A recent Glenn Erickson review mentions a fall release is planned. We'll see.
Bond Ultimate Collection - There are 14 I'd want to own. Hopefully the earlier films (1960's) will be a vast improvement transfer-wise.

For BLADE RUNNER, with a 4 month release window, I would hope for a Sept 5, release. Sept 5 would be the most profitable with student money, and the Holiday spending season.
There will be plenty of copies left after a Dec 31 cut-off to take advantage of all the Christmas gift money...though ive seen some reports of Sept 26....

Walter,
Am I the only one thinking about not ordering "Grand Prix" DVD in hope that a HD DVD of it follows soon? They got me on The Dirty Dozen and The Searchers which I'll buy again in a HD format, but it's time to limit any further financial damage of double-dipping. I'm sure there are other titles that fall under that umbrella.

Robert - Short answer - No. Posted Image

Long answer:

I did not purchase The Dirty Dozen because of Mr. Harris' post listing it as a forthcoming HD DVD release. I am applying that same reasoning to Grand Prix and other catalog titles, esp. those ones that already have an at least acceptable release. I listed the Kubrick releases for completeness, but I will be waiting to see which titles, if any, are released on HD DVD. I would probably give my left arm for an HD DVD release of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The Ford/Wayne collection is one of the great releases of the year, so that was a natural, thus I will be double dipping (actually triple dipping) The Searchers when it is released on HD DVD. I am becoming more selective with regards to SD DVD, factoring in the probability of an HD DVD release. ( If and when I make the jump to Bd that will be yet another factor. ) Like another poster, in the Criterion thread?, I am questioning the possibility of an HD release of Brazil by Universal after the reissue by Criterion later this year.

Edit: Did I use the word release enough times in this post?

- Walter.

I hope it does make it out in Sept. What has me anxious is that the last 2 Warner announcements were for Oct. releases.

Oh and for my missing 10th slot for most eagerly awaiting:
tie 10. V For Vendetta (2-disc) - a rare blind buy
tie 10. X-Men: The Last Stand - I enjoyed it, so sue me.

With the worthless HD chat, there's a lot of upcoming titles that will make my mouth water. I guess the one I'm looking forward to the most is Warner's Horror Legends set even though none of them are among my favorites.

Please, don't be so dismissive because there are other members who don't find such chat is worthless. You might not be personally interested, but that doesn't mean you have to publicly express it as worthless. I'm sure there are plenty of subject matters you have discussed endlessly here that maybe, other members don't have any interest in, but they don't feel compel to say it publicly that it's worthless.

Oooh reading that made me go all weak at the knees, quite a feat when you're sitting down. Posted Image

2001, Clockwork Orange, The Shining, fantastic. I knew the Kubrick special editions were on the way from a magazine article last year but didn't know exactly when, thanks for the info. Posted Image

Grand Prix, yay at last. This Island Earth, The Black Swan, The Little Mermaid, more Silly Symphonies? Was there enough left to fill another couple of discs?

Plus we have that Superman mega-set coming up and 20 remastered Bond films in a 40 disc box set, wow! Can't wait.

It'll be a friggin' shame if a Forbidden Planet Sp.Ed isn't released in it's 50th anniversary year.

Some interesting replies for sure, guys! As I had been suspecting, nobody has got a list as long as mine which makes me worry whether I truly am purchasing just about every classic/cult DVD release the studios throw at usPosted Image! Boy, am I glad I don't care for collecting any TV series on DVD...Posted Image

I won't get into the HD-DVD issue (the thought of having to convert a 1100+ DVD collection yet again to a superior format is too painful to bear thinking about at the momentPosted Image)...but, at least it's fair to assume that we won't be getting any such editions of most of the titles I've listed for a long time to comePosted Image.

For the record, as if you didn't knowPosted Image, I'm interested in several of the titles which have been mentioned by other posters - the 4-Discer of the LOONEY TUNES GOLDEN COLLECTION VOL. 4, the 40-Disc Ultimate James Bond Collection (1962-2002), the 14-Disc SUPERMAN Collection (1978-2006), REDS (1981) and the BLADE RUNNER (1982) 4-Discer - but their R1 release dates (not to mention some of the content) are still tenuous at best so I excluded them from my original list.

There are two posts I'd especially like to comment about, however, and these are Joel Vardy's and Jim K's respectively:

"My wishlist is fast dwindling. Though fast approaching 2000 titles I no longer have much of a wishlist left. This must surely be the tail end of the DVD craze, started in '97. It looks to have a 10 year run."

Good for you, Joel but for me it seems like the opposite holds true: my wishlist just keeps getting bigger and bigger the more DVDs I purchase because I'm forever telling myself that now that I bought this and that title, it should now perhaps be the turn of this and that other title (which I previously did not envision myself buying). Witness my latest Mondo Macabro DVD marathon: it's fair to say that five years ago, none of the 12 titles I currently own from that DVD label would have held much interest for me and indeed I wasn't even aware of the existence of most of them at that time! But, in the interim, my knowledge, interest and esteem of the Euro-Cult subgenre has grown considerably with the result that now that I've tackled Mondo Macabro, it's now the turn of No Shame, Blue Underground, Anchor Bay, Synapse, Casanegra, Dark Sky, Subversive, Media Blasters, etc.

" 8. Border Incident - the only film in the new Warner Noir set that I'd like to own.
9. Each Dawn I Die - Though I might opt for the entire Tough Guys Collection. dunno yet."

Even if I'm one who's not all that keen on having to purchase this and that Box Set to get to the titles I'd really love to own (which is why I still got a boatload of them, particularly Warners', to get my hands on), I can safely say that it's definitely not the case with their "Film Noir Vol. 3" and "Tough Guys Collection". I'm not sure how many of them you're familiar with but, given your impressive participation in the HTF Directors' Polls, I'd bet that you've watched practically all of them. But, if so, it seems even stranger to me that someone would consciously exclude, say, "G" MEN (1935), A SLIGHT CASE OF MURDER (1938), HIS KIND OF WOMAN (1951) and ON DANGEROUS GROUND (1951) from his DVD collection...especially since HD-DVD is clearly not the issue here!
