Blu-ray has had early versions of recorders and discs for sale in Japan for nearly two years now, and they have new ones coming out in the next few weeks that now support all the current BD specs, including 50GB discs with plans on releasing 100GB RW discs in the future. If, as Rob_HD, an enthusiastic HD DVD supporter, suggests, recordable media is easier to manufacture (which I happen to agree with), then where are all the HD DVD recorders? After all, they were able to release their ROM player and discs before Blu-ray. Are Toshiba and NEC having problems manufacturing the recorders and/or discs? On the other hand, perhaps due to capacity limitations they fear that they cannot compete in the same marketplace with Blu-ray as a recording format. I certainly would have expected to see HD DVD PC drives and recorders by now, especially considering that HD DVD was being developed before Blu-ray, and because it uses the same ten year old disc technology as standard DVD.
