Yep, and there'll be two versions, both streeting 6/13 for $24.96:

The Princess Bride: Dread Pirate Roberts Edition
The Princess Bride: Buttercup Edition

Uhhhh... no word yet on what this is supposed to mean. I'm guessing just packaging variations?

We'll see in June.

I see no reason to replace my current SE.

Sony is really going crazy with pointless and wasteful re-releases lately.

"And now the reprimand, from an American critic. He reproaches me for using film as a sacred & lasting medium, like a painting or a book. He does not believe that filmmaking is an inferior art, but he believes, and quite rightly, that a reel goes quickly, that the public are looking above all for relaxation, that film is fragile and that it is pretentious to express the power of one's soul by such ephemeral and delicate means, that Charlie Chaplin's or Buster Keaton's first films can only be seen on very rare and badly spoiled prints. I add that the cinema is making daily progress and that eventually films that we consider marvelous today will soon be forgotten because of new dimensions & colour. This is true. But for 4 weeks this film [The Blood of a Poet] has been shown to audiences that have been so attentive, so eager & so warm, that I wonder after all there is not an anonymous public who are looking for more than relaxation in the cinema." - Jean Cocteau, 1932

I'm still working with the first pressing. I could get the second version with the Rob Reiner commentary for under $10 CDN at any video store/Wal-Mart/Superstore. It follows me wherever I go.

What, you thought Sony was going to buy the MGM library and just sit on it? Posted Image That's Hallmark's job...

Seriously, when they decide to release "Yellowbeard", get back to me...

This is one of my absolute favorite films, so if there are any new interesting features I may check one out, but the A/V on the current SE are pretty good IMO.

One of my all time favorites...but no, I'm not going near this. The current Special Edition is more than enough.

Bad move, Sony. Posted Image

Where did you hear about that? There's no mention on Sony's press website (yet).

Another release for The Princess Bride? First was that non-anamorphic/open matte double sided disc with no extras that MGM put out in 2000. In 2001 the MGM Special Edition with the 16x9 transfer and the plethora of bonus materials was released. Now, five years later, I guess we're getting it again. The only way I can see myself buying this title again is if the commentary track (or was it two?) exclusive to the LaserDisc turns up on this new release. For those of you that don't know, the two commentaries for the 2001 SE DVD were newly recorded. For whatever reason, they didn't use the previous commentary track(s) from the LaserDisc.

Why two new releases at the same time though?

Just what we need, another SE release (or two) of The Princess Bride! That's much better than finally releasing the Leone SEs that have been out on R2 ages ago. What the hell, Sony?! Posted Image

Why? The SE is nearly perfect. Sony, that was dumb.

The original, non-anamorphic disc was one of the very first DVD's my wife and I bought, and I just upgraded to the SE about a month ago. As much as I like the film, the specs will have to be great before I triple dip on it. Of course, if I wait a few years I might can get it for the same price I got the SE for, $7.50.

Because there are completists like myself who will feel almost obligated to buy both versions. Posted Image

I have a sinking feeling that one set will be the better set but lack a feature or two that the other has...

Let's hope for group/video commentary!

"Inconsiderable"??

I don't think that word means what you think it means!!

Seriously, I thought the picture provided on the prior SE could be improved a little ... but I'm still not sure it's worth a triple-dip at this point for a slight improvement in PQ.
