Thought I'd start up a rumor/speculation thread for this, since Todd Doogan of The Digital Bits has just posted some informed speculation about Angelina Jolie being cast in the movie.
Several stories I've seen have attributed both Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez as claiming that "A Dame to Kill For" will be adapted into the second movie. At least one article I saw somewhere also said that Miller would be writing new material for the movie as well, perhaps some backstory for Hartigan, and/or some continuation of Nancy's story. I haven't read Dame, but as Doogan says, it's basically a prequel to both Hard Goodbye and Big Fat Kill. Todd speculates that Jolie will be playing Ava, whom I presume is the titular "dame to kill for."
I'm not clear on when this sequel is going to be released. Todd says end of '06/start of '07, which might work out for Jolie's schedule, since her baby is due early in the summer. IMDB already lists some specific foreign release dates for Sin City 2, and they're mostly July/August '06, but of course that might be old information, or just pure guesswork. They definitely would have to have started filming already to meet those dates, and I don't know of any information saying that they've started yet.

I am anxious for the new material. Jolie would be a GREAT choice for Ava. Really inspired!

That said, most Sin City yarns start repeating after some time. I can't imagine too many more of these films feeling fresh. New material might go a long way towards making them feel new.

Still, Jolie is a GREAT choice.

Angelina Jolie would be perfect. Hopefully, unlike JA, she'll do nudity for this role, if it requires it. :D

I'm looking forward to it, I loved Sin City.

(I just wish they would have fixed the audio hiss)

I picked up Dame to Kill For from the library on my way home today, and read it right when I got back. I can sure see why you guys (and Todd Doogan) were reacting like that to the speculation about Jolie playing this role...WOW, would she be the right one to do it! Let's just hope she agrees to do at least some of the topless scenes, I think Ava is completely hanging out in at least 50% of the story's panels...LOL. It really is tough to think of anyone besides Jolie whom one would choose to play the part, especially after her role as Jane Smith. Ava doesn't just have a mesmerizing body, her personality is also overwhelming, and the story is mostly about the power she has over all of the men who cross paths with her: she really is A Dame to Kill For. Rodriguez and company will undoubtedly get somebody babe-a-licious to play the role even if it isn't Jolie, but here's hoping it's her!

Great story, I really enjoyed it, also for some choice dialogue and voiceover that'll have the movie audiences laughing and cheering. And what a great ending (which I won't spoil for anyone who doesn't know it)--people are definitely gonna be clapping for that! Some good stuff in there for Marv, although it's pretty much a supporting role.

Marv is like spice...a little goes a long way :) I'd even keep his presence a secret as long as possible. Let him be a nice surprise.
It *really* is a role tailor-made for Jolie. I think it absolutely requires nudity, not because I want to see Jolie naked, but because it's a huge poart of the character. I know that sounds salacious, but it's not. That said, if Jolie won't agree to the nudity, keep her anyway. Jolie dressed is more Ava than most other choices in the BUCK, so to speak.
Glad you liked the story. Many feel it is the best of the Sin City yarns.

Weren't they going to adapt "A Dame..." and "Hell and Back" together? Supposedly Johnny Depp was on everyone's mind as Wallace, which could work maybe. Of course, with all of the images Wallace sees during a particular part of the book, it's alot of copyright hurdles.

The original plan was to adapt "Hell and Back" as one of the segments in the first film. I don't know what they were thinking, because it's the longest Sin City story and could easily fill an entire movie. Similarly, "A Dame to Kill For" is shorter than "That Yellow Bastard" and roughly the same length as "The Big Fat Kill" and "The Hard Goodbye" so I don't understand why they don't seem to be announcing another story. I know Miller is supposed to be working on all-new material but I can't imagine him coming up with two more stories worth of material quickly enough. It would make sense to have the next film be "A Dame to Kill For" and "Family Values" plus a few of the miscellaneous shorter stories, then devote the third film to "Hell and Back" and whatever's left from the shorter stories.

While we're on the subject, doesn't anyone else think it is outrageous that Sin City wasn't at least nominated for a visual effects Oscar? I think too many feathers were ruffled when Rodriquez dropped the director's guild to share credit with Miller. Whatever the reason, there's no way you can look at SC and not be impressed with what they achieved visually. It was groundbreaking.

The more I think about it, the more I believe Sin City used effects better than any other film this year. They weren't the best, but they meshed with the cinematography and set design flawlessly. If Sin City had replaced any of the three majors (one of which was snubbed), I don't think I would have complained.

Not me. Wallace is black :)

Really? I didn't get that impression at all from reading Hell And Back. I thought he was caucasian based on the color segments in the book, but it probably doesn't really matter as long as the actor they pick fits the Miller mold.

I was hoping the second film would include Delia's stories and then if they ever made a third Sin City movie they could just adapt To Hell And Back.

I think so. A few others don't. But the cops that continually hassle him seem to make off-the-cuff remarks and insinuations. I've seen Miller's white characters. Wallace was nothing like them visually, so I assumed he was black, or perhaps of mixed heritage.

There were also some articles around the time of the first movie's release (or maybe around the time of the first DVD release) saying that they were going to film two sequels together. IMDB has a "Sin City 3: Hell and Back" listing. Anyone heard anything else about the possibility of two sequels being filmed together?

Also, I agree that Sin City should have gotten an Oscar nom for VFX. The Academy needs to increase the number of noms for that category from 3 to 5.

Actually they call him a 'longhair' among other profane and offensive things, but not a single racial slur.

And Sin City 3: Hell and Back is listed on the IMDb.

Oh and did anyone else know that the Colonel from 'Hell and Back' and the hitman from 'The Customer is Always Right' is the same character?? I didn't!

Kain, one of the covers specifically has them referring to whether Wallace would like to do "the Rodney". Considering the racial implications of that, I think it's fair to say an insinuation occurred :)
No, Wallace doesn't fit in with how Miller draws black characters. Nor how he draws white characters. Which is why I am perfectly open to him being of mixed heritage.

The insinuation was that they would beat on him not that he had the same skin color as "Rodney".

Exactly. They were gonna beat him, that's all there is to it. We got into this debate before and I think it was pretty definitively proven that he was white. Miller has been called racist for his exaggerated drawings of black characters, and as I sit here, flipping through my copy of "Hell and Back", the difference is obvious when a black character shares a page with Wallace. The only reason anyone would even believe that he's black is the "rodney" comment and I think it's pretty obvious considering the way he's drawn that there was no racial implication.

Maybe I was just so excited by the idea of a black hero in Sin City (after 5 or 6 white ones) that I saw the ambiguity as a smart move by Miller to have a black hero. I stand by the fact that he ain't white, as he doesn't look like the white characters either, and I don't think it was "definitively proven" in the last thread at all. I think someone proved it to themselves, but not to me. Until I hear Miller say it, I'll continue to see Wallace as a man of color.

I'm amazed people see NO racial undertones in the use of Rodney as the example.

As the others pointed out, it may not be (and isn't, in my opinion) a racial undertone in regards to using it against Wallace. Can you name anyone else that is as closely associated with police brutality as Rodney? They're just putting a name to the act in an attempt at being clever. Had Wallace been black, I would imagine the cops would have been far harsher in their vocal harassment.

I think Wallace was drawn the way he was to show him as very rugged and worn, very similiar to John Rambo from First Blood. He is ex-military after all.

I think had Miller wanted Wallace to be black, he would have made it obvious and eradicated any bit of question such as the ones you have. Afterall, if he was a black hero, he would have been a black hero visually without a shadow of a doubt from his audience.
