Absolutely terrific review, Dave!

I never thought I would like Sin City,
but I blindly bought the first single DVD release
only to discover how much I loved this film.

I was very excited about the prospect of
buying the extended Special Edition -- that
is, until I learned that the extended recut
is being segregated into short stories complete
with credits.

I'm sorry - this was not what I was expecting.

The added material looks fantastic, but
unfortunately, it's not worth it for me at the
expense of having an interrupted extended cut
of the film.

Still, from what I read here, this set is
certainly worthy of a purchase for die-hard fans.

A great, detailed review, that also highlights what owners of the first version need to know - how does the presentation of the film compare with the first release?

Glad I held off buying the original barebones release. Mine's on the way to me from buy.com. I got it beceause I wanted the extra featurettes, the commentaries, etc. Getting the theatrical cut on one DVD, and the 4 extended vignettes on the other DVD is icing on the cake.

Great review Dave. I had sold my original copy of Sin City in anticipation of this version, so I can't wait. I also didn't think I would like this movie but I was pleasantly surprised. Should be getting mine probably this afternoon and can't wait to re-watch.

That's precisely the attitude in which to approach this new Special Edition set. You'll be quite satisfied!

Also glad I waited. I was nervous since I also have been waiting for Kill Bill which still has yet to come. Posted Image

I was mostly interested in the extras and it sounds like they don't disappoint. Posted Image

I loved SIN CITY, but think I'll pass on this edition, simply because I think the original presentation is fine as it is and I really don't care for extras anymore...but that was one great review!Posted Image

Wow, I finally took the "patience is a virtue" road and the fateful day arrived sooner than expected! Hopefully the same will hold true for the upcoming Mr. & Mrs. Smith DVD that Mr. Prior just recently finished. Posted Image

Wait just a minute - you mean this extended cut is really only 8 minutes longer? The other 15 minutes are credits? Talk about cheating on the advertising!

8 minutes is still great, but 23 minutes is tremendous, and since it was promised...

Please tell me I read the review wrong! Posted Image

Yeah, there's only 8 minutes of scenes added back in. The rest is credits. If you want to try to look at that positively, you can say that the scenes that are added back in are the ones that RR wants to see in his movie. It's not everything they shot, it's what works best and adds to the movie.

I was expecting the extra footage to be just that. No triple dip here. I already have the first release and the UMD.

Hmmm... re-cut and extended in 4 parts. Well not exactly what I expected but I'll still be picking it up. But damn it I was expecting at least a 3 hour movie not an extra 8 minutes!! But who am I fooling! The Sin City fan in me is interested in watching the new scenes, especially in the Hard Goodbye. Overall a good review David!!

Another great review, Dave!

I often listen to films at nite with headphones on (while gf is asleep) so I tend to notice virtually any audio anomaly pretty quick. The background noise present in some dialog sounds like it was filtered digitally for noise reduction purposes and the artifacts to me are very noticeable. It is very possible that it is on the source audio stems. If so, then fixing them is probably very unlikely. Weird that whoever did sound on the production didn't catch this. If it occured in Post or during a mixdown than that is even MORE weird.

I do NOT like how they are marketing this "new footage!" wise so I'm on the fence.

Anyways, great, thorough in depth review!

thanks for helping me to understand exactly what the audio issue was about...once you had described it in detail I was instantly able to detect what you're talking about (as was Rafael) without the need of any headphones during our viewing session over the weekend.

Are the theatrical trailers anamorphically enhanced? 5.1?

Thanks for the great write-up. I agree with Ron that this is not a purchase I'm interested in making, though perhaps for slightly different reasons. From your review and several others, I find that I'm definitely not interested in the (barely) extended cut with the inferior audio and video. And the "featurettes"? Not at all compelling. On the other hand, I am interested in hearing the commentary tracks for the original cut on Disc 1. But not quite interested enough to justify a purchase of the whole set, at least not until such time as it's priced closer to its actual value. Along those lines, I wonder if there might ever be a stand-alone release of disc 1, featuring the theatrical cut with the superior a/v and the commentaries?

I bought the original release for cheap and while I did enjoy it I think I'll pass on this.
