I'm definitely a newbie at all this...

I've got a Sony KV-36HS420 TV with an HDMI input. Is there any reason I can't output a DVD signal from a 1394 connection (same as firewire, correct?) from my computer and into the TV's HDMI? If I understand correctly, this would give me a pure digital connection (also the computer does PAL conversion alot better than my stand-alone-player).

Anybody got any info/links about this? Thanks much.

Is their such thing as a HDMI-1394 cable? I haven't seen one, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Install a Video card with a DVI output in your computer. Connect the DVI out to your TV's HDMI in using an appropriate adaptor cable. The Firewire interface is completely different, and it is unlikely that your TV actually has one.

Okay, that's probably why I couldn't find a firewire-to-HDMI cable...!:b Thanks Jeremy (and Seth).

Here's another question: I understand HDMI carries both video and audio, but is it possible to split the audio off to just two channel, analog that I could still plug into (via RCA plugs) my analog reciever? I hate to waste the digital audio, but I only have a analog reciever currently. I'd at least be interested in knowing whether this option exists.

The "ideal" solution:

Connect one HDMI cable from DVD Player to receiver, connect another from receiver to TV. Everything is digital so that no Analog/Digital Conversions need occur, and signal to noise is maximized for both audio and video. It's also encrypted, to the delight of the MPAA/RIAA. But I digress.

The "compromise" solution:

Connect one HDMI cable from DVD player to TV. Connect SPDIF cable from DVD player to receiver. Forget about video switching. If you want to listen to DVD-Audio or SACD, you'll need to use analogue multichannel connections (usually with limited bass management functionality)
