OK, all you serious collectors out there... What should I keep? (1 Viewer)

OK, all you serious collectors out there... Due to space restraints, I'm attempting to thin my collection (now approaching 2700 DVDs) of some doubles acquired due to updating/upgrading. The following have all been replaced with more recent editions.

My question is for all you earnest collectors out there (you know who you are); it concerns whether any of the following should be kept for collector's reasons (different edit of film, aspect ratio, special extras now unavailable, etc.) rather than sold or given away to family members.

I appreciate your help and expertise...

So, what you're saying is that you have *TWO* copies of Showgirls? Eeesh.

Personally, I always sell an old version of a film if I am upgrading to a newer release. The only exception in my case is with Apocalypse Now and Apocalypse Now Redux. I've only kept the latter version as a curiousity -- I prefer the original cut. I still may sell the Redux version at some point.

The only DVD I regret selling was the original cut of Amadeus (which is on your list, too). The transfer was quite good, and I prefer this cut of the film to the new director's cut.

I suppose I should keep the theatrical version of Showgirls for the same reason, huh Jim?

You can toss the original release of The Thing and Halloween III. They're non-anamorphic and their re-releases are anamorphic. I believe that all the special features are ported over from the original discs too but you may want to double check instead of going by my memory.

no, the original release of "the thing" has an isolated score the re-release doesn't have.

The Sixth Sense Vista Series contains most, but not all, the extras from The Sixth Sense Collector's Edition. Here's a review that does a great job of comparing the two:

Jack, which editions of Dances with Wolves do you have?

None of them are worth keeping except for Amadeus (for theatrical cut) and Dances With Wolves (theatrical cut in OAR).

Many people would say to keep the original version of The Big Lebowski...not too pleased with the PQ of the new version, a matter of taste since both aren't great.

12 Monkeys: keep the DD over the dts, IMO, for the good extras (I usually prefer dts sound, so it's not like I don't notice that). You don't say if you have the newer release...

The Thing: unless you actually listen to isolated scores on DVD, toss the original if you have the new.

Boogie Nights: you mean there's a newer/superior version to the Platinum release...I didn't know that!!

Edit: re Boogie Nights, you might have the single disc Platinum, in which case ditch it for the 2-disc Platinum that I was thinking of...

Boogie Nights- The 2 disc platinum edition has a group
commentary that the single disc doesn't have, and the
video is better than the single disc- the colors are
over-saturated on the single disc, and IIRC the single disc
wasn't anamorphic.

The original Weird Science disc wasn't anamorphic, and I
think the original Raging Bull DVD also wasn't anamorphic.

Buy yourself a load of double- and triple- disc cases, stick both versions in the one box with the cover art back to back, recycle the empty boxes to replace damaged ones. Problem solv-ed.

I was going to make the same suggestion, I bought quite a few double amaray's and just kept both because I liked both versions (Spinal Tap for instance)......if you like the cover art to the old versions, well that is up to you how to deal with it, for an example I ditched the new cover for The Thing and just kept the old cover in a double amaray with both discs.

and if you don't want to ditch the other artwork, why not store them in a binder with those clear insert pages (like they use for autographed photos)? A thousand DVD labels will take up less room in a binder than keeping them in the DVD cases.

Slightly OT, but is there a major store that sells the
double cases? I have a few doubles, and I would like to
just keep the old and new DVD in the same case. Thanks.

I got most of mine from iNETDVD but there are many other's to chose from, such as Sleeve City whom I have also used since their prices came down.

I bought from Shop4Tech because they were (a year ago) one of the cheapest places. It looks like they still might be one of the cheapest.

I looked at Shop4tech but I didn't like them because they don't offer true alpha or amaray cases and not with the variety of colors the other sites do, that may not be a deal breaker for some but it was for me.

I totally understand. But as far as basic cases, their prices are great.

I just wanted single black slims ... and 500 for $55 (with free shipping)
