Geez! He's made a lot of movies.

Out of Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

The Baby of Mâcon (1993) Posted ImagePosted Image - I'm probably being generous. Of course, I've only watched it once and on a disc of questionable origin, which was improperly tagged as widescreen, when it is actually anamorphic. Since I don't have an HDTV, I got to watch 2 hours of 9 foot tall people. I have since discovered how to fix that little glitch, so I can give it another spin, if I ever feel like it.

Prospero's Books (1991) N/A - Saw it too long ago and it caught me more than a bit by surprise. I recall it being similar to Baby of Macon in that it blurred the line between drama and drama within the drama.

The Cook the Thief His Wife & Her Lover (1989) Posted ImagePosted Image1/2 - Been a long time, but nobody could ever forget that final scene.

I disagree, I think George should seek out several Greenaway titles.

The Cook the Thief His Wife & Her Lover (1989) 1/2 - Been a long time, but nobody could ever forget that final scene.

Never got that far -- one of the few films I've walked out on. I did give it a fair chance until about 20 minutes before the end when there was a mass exodus. I spent the time waiting for my date speaking with the theatre worker in the lobby who complained about having to clean up vomit after showings. The first 100 minutes of the film were unpleasant, disgusting and misogynistic. When Ebert gave this 4 stars, I knew I'd be skeptical of him from then on.

I've seen:

Pillow Book
The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover

Unless he again casts a must-see actor like Ewan McGregor, I don't think I'll be seeing any more of his films.

Heh.

I have to give Cook another look. I know the local rental pit of hell has 8 1/2 Women. Guess I'll see if I find any others.

In order of merit:

1.The Draughtsman's Contract (1982) ***
2.The Cook the Thief His Wife & Her Lover (1989) ***
3.Drowning by Numbers (1988) ***
4.The Tulse Luper Suitcases, Part 3: From Sark to the Finish (2003) *1/2

Not many would put THE DRAUGHTSMAN'S CONTRACT at the top, I guess, but even if I liked nos. 2 and 3 well enough (from what I recall of the latter from many years ago), they leave a bad taste in the mouth which does not make one remember them with affection.

As for TULSE LUPER, I was lucky enough [sic] to watch it at last year's Venice Film Festival with the director himself in attendance; after the film, we were given a chance to meet him up close and personal...but I hated the film so much that I passed on that unique opportunity for fear of losing control of myself and knocking him out for making me waste 2 hours of my precious timePosted Image! At least, the entrance for that particular screening was freePosted Image!

It's strange but being such a fan of Bunuel one would think that "modern" Surrealists like Greenaway, Jodorowsky and Lynch would be much more to my liking but - no. Even so, I'm still interested in catching up with A ZED AND TWO NOUGHTS (1985), THE BELLY OF AN ARCHITECT (1987), PROSPERO'S BOOKS (1991) and THE BABY OF MACON (1993) and might even rent THE PILLOW BOOK (1996) and 8 1/2 WOMEN (1999) one of these days.

Nightwatching (2007) - 5/10
8 ½ Women (1999) - 6/10
The Pillow Book (1996) - 7/10
The Cook the Thief His Wife & Her Lover (1989) - 9/10

Drowning by Numbers (1988) - 10/10

Inside Rooms: 26 Bathrooms, London & Oxfordshire, 1985 (1985) - 8/10

Windows (1975) - 8/10
H Is for House (1973) - 5/10
Intervals (1969) - 6/10

Watched part of The Draughtsman's Contract, but I can't remember why I didn't finish it. I have a vague memory that there were interesting concepts but the execution was tedious. Also back in college I started on Prospero's Books but didn't make it far. I remember excessive nudity, though.
