Roberto Rossellini was a chief developer of the neo-realist style. After making some of the classics of the genre, he turned to a more romantic, melodramatic style of filmmaking after beginning a scandalous affair with Ingrid Bergman. They collaborated on several films together. Following their breakup, he then began making historical films, both features and television, up until his death.
1. Germany Year Zero - A (my choice for the best neo-realist film, is the story of a young boy trying to survive the poverty and starvation of post-war Berlin)
2. Stromboli - A (Powerful visual style and tremendous performance by Ingrid Bergman)
3. Paisa - A- (A 6-part film describing interactions between American soldiers and the Italian people. Parts 1-2 & 5-6 are incredibly powerful, parts 3-4 are on a much lower level)
4. Generale della Rovere - A-
5. The Flowers of St. Francis - B+
6. Rome Open City - B (feels more "movieish" and overdramatized compared to Paisa and Germany Year Zero)
7. The Rise of Louis XIV - B
8. Where is Freedom? - C+
Own: 1 (I would buy Stromboli and Paisa)
Would love to see more of his work, especially Voyage in Italy and Europa '51.
