The Features

It was never easy for me. I was born a poor black child. I remember the days, sittin' on the porch with my family, singin' and dancin' down in Mississippi.
–Steve Martin as Navin R. Johnson (The Jerk – 1979)

Swing and a ground ball…stabbed by Foulke. He has it. He underhands to first, and the Boston Red Sox are the world champions! For the first time in 86 years, the Red Sox have won baseball’s world championship! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT!?
–Joe Castiglione (WEEI Radio – 2004)

Who can turn the world on with her smile?
Who can take a nothing day and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile?

–Sonny Curtis – Opening Theme (The Mary Tyler Moore Show – 1971)

The Disclaimer
Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed advertisements, the Sunday of the week of release (so as to catch any week-of-release sale prices). All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price. If a price is marked "$_N/A_" in the grid, it means that this title is not shown as available on that chain's website or perhaps in their ads...but it COULD still be in-stores!

$_"LP" means the advertisement says "Low Price", and $_"HP" means the advertisement says "Hot Price". Use of either of these in the Roundup grid indicates that I could not locate a definite price for the item, and the ad is all I have to go on. Retailers use these phrases in advertisements so that they do not violate MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) agreements with the studios. Doing so can cost them thousands or even millions of dollars in co-op advertising funds.

I only include the titles I feel like including (or the ones Dave tells me he's looking for ;o)). In fact, the titles are pretty much the ones I'm personally interested in, with few exceptions. I don't get paid for this, and I don't have time to devote to doing every DVD. So, please don't complain. If there is a title not included in the Roundup that you want to see, just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone...like Dave & I do!

Note that Circuit City does not guarantee their sale prices in Hawaii. Also note that I cannot include Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club prices in the standard Roundup: they set prices at individual stores based on nearby competition, so there is not a way I can say here what price you'll find at YOUR local Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club location. When it comes to Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club prices mentioned at all, just remember that "Your Mileage May Vary".

The Specials

**BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL! xXx – State of the Union SE is available in both OAR and MAR versions...get the correct one!

--Gang: some of my sources are showing the release (or re-release) this week of many of the Pink Panther titles. Amazon is showing them all (list of titles to follow) at $10.46. Best Buy & Circuit City are not showing them. List includes: Curse of the Pink Panther, The Pink Panther, Pink Panther Strikes Again, Revenge of the Pink Panther, A Shot in the Dark, Son of the Pink Panther, and The Trail of the Pink Panther.

--Also, many sources showed the release this week of a Wim Wenders Box Set #2. But that seems to be on indefinite hold. Amazon now has a release date of December 31, 2025! :D

--Best Buy is offering, this week, yet another in its series of EXCLUSIVE DVDs. This week it is Battlestar Galactica: Season 1 for $49.99. Includes in-pack bonus disc. Best Buy Exclusive: U.K. version. Get it here first! Features 13 episodes plus deleted scenes. Bonus Disc features a sneak peek of the upcoming Joss Whedon film Serenity. Best Buy is also offering a $15 savings with the purchase of Battlestar Galactica: Season 1 with any one of the following DVDs: Cleopatra 2525: Complete Series, Earth 2: Complete Series, or Sliders: Season 3.

--Attention Best Buy Reward Zone Members! Best Buy is offering up some great prices on some of this week’s TV on DVD offerings...but ya gotta have a Reward Zone membership. How about just $19.99 for any of the following sets:

[c]3rd Rock from the Sun ($27.99)
Gilligan’s Island: Season 3 ($29.99)
Brady Bunch: Season 2 ($29.99)
Remington Steele: Season 1 ($29.99)
Mary Tyler Moore: Season 2 ($24.99)[/c]

--And, Best Buy is also advertising an EXCLUSIVE bonus DD with its copies of 3rd Rock from the Sun. Bonus on-pack content, featuring extended bloopers and Dick’s best outtakes.

--Target is offering $5 gift cards with each purchase of the DVD sets Remington Steele: Season 1 ($29.99) or 3rd Rock From the Sun: Season 1 ($29.99).

The Appeal

Any visitor to the Weekly RoundUp should be sure to check out the new Main Portal Page of the Home Theater Forum….FOR TWO VERY GOOD REASONS!

First: Parker & Ron have re-formatted the Portal Page to include exclusive HT industry news you won’t find in any place on the HTF! Second: You will help support the Home Theater Forum and keep it up and running.

Operating the HTF is not free for Parker and Ron. That is why there is advertising throughout the forum and there has been the occasional membership fund drive. THIS IS AN EASY WAY FOR YOU TO HELP…AND IT’S FREE OF CHARGE…AND INFORMATIVE, TOO! :D

If you simply link to the Portal Page when you start your visits to the HTF, that act alone wILL bring revenue to the forum. While it would also be nice if you wanted to click on some of the advertisers’ links and check out their deals and sales (that form of “window shopping” would bring even more revenue to the forum), the simple act of landing on the Portal Page registers a “hit” or “impression” that creates revenue for the HTF.

So, if you’ve been “sneaking in” to the HTF through links to your favorite thread or forum, please take an extra second of your time and land first on the HTF Portal Page. You’ll see the new Industry News sections AND help out financially. THANKS!

Before we get to my buys of the week, it's time for:
Scott_J's (Not So) Interesting Fact #452
As credited by Mr. F, that Red Sox quote at the top of the Roundup was spoken by Joe Castiglione. Joe Castiglione is a native of my hometown, Hamden, CT, and is the brother-in-law of one of my 3rd grade teachers, back in the day.

Now it's time for my (Not So) Interesting To Buy List for this week. :) The only definite this week is MTM S2 (already on its way). But I am tempted by that Red Sox release. It's $80 at Digital Eyes and I have a $40 credit there - $40 is tempting. Altough I'm not quite sure why it's called the 2004 World Series Collector's Edition when it was quite possibly the most anti-climactic World Series ever following that 7-game LCS.

On a side note, I would love for them to release the 2001 World Series in a similar package - that one was great right up until the final out.

And before I forget - thanks, as always, Mike and Patrick.

After a couple of weeks of complete rest, my wallet is pushed to the limit this week. Huge.

Benny Hill
Brady Bunch
The Jerk
Mary Tyler Moore
Rumpole of the Bailey Seasons 5-7
Star Trek: Enterprise

There's also a release Tuesday of The Pink Panther and A Shot in the Dark. I've seen no reviews, so have no idea if this is better than the versions I currently have or not. I suspect these may be individual releases from last year's box set which I passed on since I only want the first two films. If so, these may be added to my list also.

In any case, a very busy week. Thanks for the roundup.

DeepDiscountDVD.com shows the World Series set at $77.97 and Benny Hill at 29.97. God I love that site!

All I want this week is Enterprise S2, which happens to come out on my birthday, so I'm hoping to get it as a gift. If not, I'm hoping Costco pulls through with a $84.99 price like S1.

Oh, WOW!

This is a *big week* for me with:
Remington Steele Season One
Mary Tyler Moore Season Two (FINALLY!)
Battlestar Galactica Season One
Xena: 10th Anniversary Edition

(Hmmm ... Whatever happened to Movies on DVD? Remember when we used to purchase those? :))

It seems terribly ironic that now that many of us have native 16:9 HDTV Widescreen displays, we seem to be purchasing more and more 4:3 SDTV stuff!

Just a friendly reminder for folks who are thinking of purchasing the Best Buy "UK Version" of Battlestar Galactica Season 1: This version appears to be bare-bones with nothing but deleted scenes as extras.

If you want the REAL US version of Battlestar Galactica, you would be better off waiting until September. The US version will contain the miniseries, commentaries on almost every episode, deleted scenes, documentaries, and more. After the traditional retailers discounts, the price will be almost the same as Best Buy's exclusive version...

View page 4 of this thread for details!

Kenneth: I was hoping you'd be by today so I could wish you a Happy Birthday!
I noticed your name listed with the other birthday boys and girls on the index page! :D

Just The Jerk for me this week. Haven't seen it since the theaters on its initial release. I'm hoping I still find it as funny now as I did then. Since I've been laughing at all the quotes in the thread about this new release, I'm confident I will.

George: In case you missed it in the RoundUp, there's quite a few releases besides The Pink Panther and A Shot in the Dark:

Wish I had more info on them.

I wonder if that Red Sox set is something that's going to come down in price as time goes on...or just get more expensive....

Thanks Mike. I saw that, but I'm only interested in the first two. I see no chance that they're new releases, but I'm hoping that they are individual releases from the box set, since, from the reviews of the box set, they have improved PQ over my original dvds.

I agree! The first season was released, what, two and a half years ago?? I love MTM, and with TV Land no longer airing reruns, I need these DVDs. I'll be at Best Buy with my Reward Zone card first thing Tuesday :D

"Altough I'm not quite sure why it's called the 2004 World Series Collector's Edition when it was quite possibly the most anti-climactic World Series ever following that 7-game LCS."

because if they lost the series it would have been the same thing as always, another loss and who cares.

pro'ly just match ren and stimpy from taget at best buy.
