From emotional neo-realism to grand historical epics. A director I need to explore further, his films are beautifully made and often reveal great emotional depth.

*1. La Terra Trema - A (Searing story of a family of fishermen trying to buck the system and escape the cycle of poverty)
2. Senso - A (beautiful historical epic highlighted by a stunning battle sequence)
*3. Le Notti Bianche - A- (A deeply emotional love story augmented by outstanding cinematography and set design. One of Marcello Mastrianni's greatest performances)
4. Death In Venice - A- (An initially off-putting distance reveals a film of great emotional depth fueled by Dirk Bogarde's outstanding performance)
5. The Leopard - B+ (Dense, yet sprawling story can be trying, but worthy both for its beauty and its cast with the great Burt Lancaster, Alain Delon, and Claudia Cardinale)
6. Ossessione - B+ (I haven't seen the other films to compare this with, but this is the first filmed version of "The Postman Always Rings Twice")
7. Ludwig - B+

8. Boccaccio '70 (segment "Il lavoro") - B-  - -  -       --dfklj
9. Rocco and His Brothers - B- (An overlong story about a rural family trying to "make it" and stay together in the big city)
10. The Damned - C+ (Man, does this go off the deep end!)

Rank order:

Ossessione (1943)
Senso (1954)
Rocco and His Brothers (1960)
Gattopardo, Il (1963)
... aka The Leopard (USA)

I dislike this director quite a bit. Ossessione is the best of what I've seen, but it pales compared to the American remake, and focuses way too much on the things that will dominate and ruin his later work such as Rocco and the Leopard. I have Senso on my tivo, and needless to say, I'm not looking forward to it. But who knows, maybe it'll be his equivalent to Bunuel's Exterminating Angel.

Just The Leopard, The Stranger, and Ossessione for me.

Quote:
Had considered renting La Terra Trema but it didn't look like it'd be worth my time so I put it right back on the shelf.

Same here. Posted Image (Might still rent it one of these days; there are a few others on the list that sound interesting.)

Edited to add Senso.

Warning to those who don't like dubs because it doesn't represent the acting of the original actor. Stay away from this. Even subtitled, Farley Granger's peformance is clearly dubbed.

In order of merit:

1.The Leopard (1963) ****
2.Rocco and His Brothers (1960) ***1/2
3.Death in Venice (1971) ***1/2
4.The Damned (1969) ***1/2
5.The Innocent (1976) ***1/2
6.Senso (1954) ***
7.La Terra Trema (1948) ***
8.Bellissima (1951) **1/2

I also have BOCCACCIO '70 (1962) and LUDWIG (1972) on VHS. I've missed out on LE NOTTI BIANCHE (1957) several times on Italian TV - and I sure am glad that Criterion decided to release it on DVDPosted Image. As for OSSESSIONE (1942), I didn't pick up the BFI's R2 SE DVD because of the reportedly battered print used for the transfer (Image's similarly unsatisfactory R1 disc is bare-bones to boot!); I wonder whether Criterion have this in the pipeline... Another one I'm especially interested in would be THE STRANGER (1967) which has never been on TV in my lifetimePosted Image!!
